Constructing a rice core collection for BrazilAbstract -The Rice Germplasm Collection of Embrapa consists of approximately 10,000 accessions. This study aimed to establish a core collection using the currently available information data for those accessions. The strategy Core Collection (CN) was introduced in the management of plant genetic resources with the main purpose of improving the use of these resources. CN should be selected in order to preserve the genetic variability of the whole collection (CI), with minimum redundancy. The accessions within the rice collection were classified into three strata: a) landraces from Brazil (VT); b) breeding materials from Brazil (LCM); and c) introductions (LCI). The landraces were further classified according to crop system (uplands, lowlands and facultative). These three strata were represented in the Core Collection, but more emphasis was considered in representing the landraces, which are represented by 308 accessions. The accessions were allocated, for each crop system, proportionally to the product of the logarithm of the number of landraces by the Shannon Diversity Index (a measure of genetic diversity) within each crop system. Curators and breeders, supported by a Geographical Information System (GIS) made the selection of the accessions. The final Brazilian rice Core Collection consists of 550 accesses.Index terms: Oryza sativa, GIS, genetic diversity, genetic resources, uplands, lowlands. The present study had as objective to evaluate of the genetic divergence among 35 landraces of common bean. The experimental design was carried out in a randomized block with four repetitions. The variance analysis revealed significant difference at 1 and 5% levels of probability for the evaluated characteristics. The Cluster analysis based in the morpho-agronomic traits presented difference among Andean and Mesoamerican landrace cultivars, which it allocated the landrace cultivars in different groups. The Tocher and the Nearest Neighbor methods demonstrated that the most dissimilars cultivars were Carioca sem Cipó and Jalo, whereas Roxinho Mineiro and Carioca sem Cipó cultivars were the more similars. The first two canonic variables were sufficient to explain about 81.90% of the total variation showed in this study. These results reveal large genetic diversity among the landraces from Mato Grosso do Sul state.
BRS 7762 Supremo -A black common bean cultivar with erect plant type INTRODUCTIONDuring the 2003/2004 crop season, about 2.7 million tons of common bean were produced in Brazil on an area of 2.7 million hectares, i.e., a national average productivity of 1.000 kg ha -1 . Although the average productivity has increased, the average per capita consumption has been decreasing attaining an annual consumption of only 12.7 kg inhabitant -1 . In Brazil, the national production of black beans does not meet the internal consumption demand, which is particularly true for the states in the south as well as Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. An annual import of about 100 thousand tons is necessary to meet this demand. The common bean genetic improvement program of Embrapa Rice and Beans is focused on cultivars that are more productive, more disease resistant and have an erect plant type enabling mechanical harvest, offering the final consumer a better product quality and the farmers a higher revenue. ABSTRACT -The black bean cultivar BRS 7762 Supremo developed by Embrapa Rice and Beans was released for cultivation in the States Santa Catarina, Paraná, Goiás and the Federal District. This cultivar is resistant to several rust pathotypes, to bean common mosaic virus and to four pathotypes caused by the anthracnose agent.
, which was 11.18% above control means, and it presented resistance to anthracnose. Mean 100-seed weight was 28.2 g, and protein content was 29%, the highest value observed among cultivars realeased in the State. Its crude fiber content is similar to those of top cultivars. It presents indeterminate growth habit, plant architecture type II and good lodging resistance, being suitable to mechanical harvest.
