A wide range of studies have examined the impact of collaborative learning (CL) on critical thinking skills in various learning subjects. However, very few of them are conducted in the field of Islamic education. Thus, the current study aimed at examining the impact of CL on learners' critical thinking skills in addressing Islamic radicalism as well as their critical thinking retention. Subsequently, this study also investigated learners' perspectives on CL. A mixed method approach was applied. 40 learners, 18 male and 22 female learners, from an Islamic education department at a university in Bengkulu, Indonesia, were engaged as the samples of experimentation, and 9 of them were purposively selected to be the participants for the purpose of a qualitative investigation. The quantitative data were analyzed using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test, and the qualitative data were analyzed using an interactive model of analysis. The findings revealed that CL had a positive and significant impact on learners' critical thinking skills. CL also supported the retention of their critical thinking skills. Subsequently, the learners perceived that CL was contributive to their emotional awareness, learning motivation, cognitive development, and broad-mindedness. Grounded in the current findings, further studies can proceed to construct a theoretical CL model which incorporates components such as critical thinking, learning motivation, cognitive development, and social competence.

This study used observation and interview techniques to gather data as regards objectives of this study. After the data were collected, the next step was to analyze the data using the approach of Miles et al comprised of selecting and mapping data, presenting data, and verifying conclusions. This study drew the following conclusion: the learning model applied by PAI teachers was first an active and cooperative learning model. It referred to a learning model that led students to be active and creative, not just listening, but also carrying out activities such as processing, finding, and utilizing information. Second, the contextual learning model, this model helped educators link between the materials taught and real-world situations experienced by students, so that students could find a relationship between the knowledge they had and its application in their lives as family and community members.

Teacher leadership theory has underlined the essence of teacher collaboration (TC) in helping students learn better. Also, many studies and theories have argued that TC can be an effective way to provide learning feedback. Thus, this mixed-method study aimed to experimentally examine the effect of teacher collaborative metacognitive feedback (TCMF) on educational management (EM) students’ metacognition, to see the different effects on EM students’ metacognition as affected by TCMF and by individual teaching metacognitive feedback (ITMF), and to qualitatively probe into students’ perceptions of teacher collaboration. The quantitative study conducted a quasi-experimental method by involving 44 EM students. A valid and reliable scale of metacognition adopted from a previous study was utilized as the instrument of data collection. The qualitative study conducted interviews with 8 students selected purposively, and the data were analyzed interactively to reach credible information. This study revealed that TCMF positively and significantly affected EM students’ metacognition. TCMF contributed to EM students’ metacognition better than ITMF did. The students perceived that TC developed their collaborative skills, continuously supporting their critical thinking skills, intercultural communicative competence, and problem-solving skills. Limitations, implications, and recommendations for further research are discussed.
