This new definition and terminology of CPG should be implemented in dermatology to harmonize communication in the clinical routine, clinical trials and scientific literature. Acute/subacute forms of prurigo are separated entities, which need to be differentiated from CPG and will be discussed in a next step. In the near future, the cross-sectional EPP will provide relevant clinical data on various aspects of CPG leading to new directions in the scientific investigation of CGP.

We compared ADHD-related temporal processing and response inhibition deficits in children and adults using event-related potentials (ERPs) during cued continuous performance tasks (CPT, O-X-version, plus a more demanding flanker version). ERP markers of temporal processing (Cue CNV) and inhibition (NoGo P300) were obtained in matched groups of children (32 with ADHD, mean age 11.2 years, and 31 controls, mean age 11.1 years) and adults (22 ADHD, mean age 42.7 years, and 22 controls, mean age 44.0 years). ERP markers and performance reflected both age and ADHD status. Performance was poorer, and Cue CNV and NoGo P300 were weaker in ADHD children and adults compared to their matched controls. ADHD-related ERP differences in children were more prominent at posterior scalp sites but more pronounced at anterior scalp sites in adults, paralleling the prominent topographic changes of both ERP markers with development. The fact that differences in the same test and the same processing period appear in both children and adults, but that they present in different aspects of performance and different scalp topographies, leads to the conclusion that some ADHD-related deficits persist into adulthood despite alterations of their qualitative aspects.
Chronic pruritus is difficult to treat and requires the evaluation of new therapeutic modalities. We initiated an open-labelled, two-arm prospective, proof-of-concept study applying two selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors on a long-term basis. Paroxetine and fluvoxamine were tested in a total of 72 pruritic patients (27 men, 45 women, age range 28-88 years, mean age 59.2 years). The reduction in pruritus was evaluated by analysis of visual analogue scores and determination of the maximal antipruritic effect (maximal percentual reduction in pruritus). Forty-nine of 72 patients (68.0%) experienced a weak (n=9), good (n=16) or very good (n=24) antipruritic effect. Statistical analysis proved the efficacy of paroxetine and fluvoxamine with no significant difference. The best response was observed in patients with pruritus due to atopic dermatitis, systemic lymphoma and solid carcinoma. Chronic scratch lesions healed completely in 14/31 patients and partially in 17/31 patients. Adverse drug effects were observed in 70.8% of patients, resulting in discontinuation of treatment in 18 patients. These results support previous reports of high antipruritic potency of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, which are a good alternative treatment modality in chronic pruritus. This should be confirmed in future double-blind studies.
Attentional and preparatory deficits in ADHD continue into adulthood, and the attenuated CNV appears to reflect a particularly stable ADHD marker. Although some deficit reductions may have gone undetected due to small sample size, the findings challenge those developmental lag models postulating that most ADHD-related deficits become negligible with brain maturation.
We interpret our findings as possible central correlates of changes in the motor system in subjects with chronic itch, with activation of the basal ganglia possibly correlating to the vicious itch-scratch-circle in subjects with chronic itching skin diseases. However, further neuroimaging studies in healthy subjects and also in different skin diseases are needed to understand the complex mechanisms of the processing of itch.
Third-party interventions are defined as the interruption of dyadic interactions by third animals through direct physical contact, interposing or threats. Previous studies focused on analysing interventions against agonistic encounters. However, evaluations of interventions against affiliative behaviours in relation to the intervening animal's social relationships and its social and spatial position are missing. Therefore, horses are an interesting model species, as interventions occur against affiliative interactions most frequently. We analysed 67 interventions in affiliative interactions, displayed between 64 feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) in three groups. Particular, high ranking females intervened in the affiliative interactions of group mates in the stable horse harems. Intervening animals took an active part in affiliative and agonistic encounters within the group, but did not occupy particularly social roles or spatial positions in the group. They generally supported preferred group mates when intervening and thus protect their own social bonds. Some species may prevent competition for preferred partners from escalating into more costly agonistic encounters by protecting their social bonds through affiliative interventions.
