European academy of dermatology and venereology European prurigo project: expert consensus on the definition, classification and terminology of chronic prurigo

Abstract: This new definition and terminology of CPG should be implemented in dermatology to harmonize communication in the clinical routine, clinical trials and scientific literature. Acute/subacute forms of prurigo are separated entities, which need to be differentiated from CPG and will be discussed in a next step. In the near future, the cross-sectional EPP will provide relevant clinical data on various aspects of CPG leading to new directions in the scientific investigation of CGP.

“…1 The results of this survey also support the established finding that PN confers a heavy burden on patients and that these patients likely require more frequent use of healthcare resources. In particular, respondents indicated that the most urgent topics in PN are the need for consensus regarding the classification and terminology of the condition, and new therapies.…”

“…For pruritus NRS, patients report average pruritus intensity (over the last 7 days) using an 11‐point scale (0–10, 0 = no itch and 10 = worst itch) . Prurigo nodules are hyperkeratotic, excoriated, pruritic nodules commonly associated with AD and chronic pruritus . As there are no standardized prurigo measures, we collected the following exploratory data on prurigo nodules: Presence/absence (0 = absent, 1 = present); number (<10, ≥10 to <100, ≥100); and size of most significant prurigo (diameter) (<2 mm, ≥2 to <4 mm, ≥4 to <8 mm, ≥8 mm).…”

“…However, PCM is characterized by urticarial or solid pruriginous papules, which sometimes gather to form lichenified plaques; they are spread over the trunk and extremities with each eruption lasting for several weeks. Various etiologies, including dermatological, allergic, systemic, neurological, psychiatric/psychosomatic, multifactorial and unknown are thought to act as a trigger for itch and the development of various skin symptoms in chronic prurigo …”
