The estimation of stature from length of long bones of the free limbs is often an important contribution to the identification of unknown human remains. The need for identification was realized, perliaps more keenly than ever before in the history of mankind, during the United States Repatriation Program. This program was established by an Act of Congress in 1944. It incladed the identification (when possible) of unknown war casualties and was assigned to the American Graves Registration Service under Quartermaster Corps. Identification Laboratories were established in suitable parts of the world and the aid of physical anthropologists was enlisted.Interest in stature estimation from long bones is not new but the number of actual investigations on the subject is relatively few. The most significant report in the last century was that by Rollet in 1888. He measured stature and lengths of the long bones of 50 male and 50 female French cadavers ranging in age from 24 to 99 years and presented all pertinent data including not only the methods of measurement but also the individual measurements and the resultant tables for stature estimation. Stature measurements were taken "generally in the week which followed death" with the cadaver lying on a graduated stretcher. The soft parts were then dissected away
Reliability theory " is reinterpreted as a theory regarding the adequacy with which one can generalize from one observation to a universe of observations. If the observation is randomly sampled from the universe-whether or not the universe consists of equivalent observations-the intraclass correlation provides an approximate lower bound to the expected value of the desired coefficient of generalizability.
The Defense Mechanism Inventory, a paper and pencil test which purports to measure the relative intensity of usage of five major groups of defenses, is described. The inventory consists of 10 brief stories, two per conflict area, followed by four questions regarding S's actual behavior, fantasy behavior, thoughts, and feelings in the situations described. Five responses typifying the five defenses (i.e., hostility-out, projection, principalization, turning-against-self, and reversal) are provided for each question, from which S selects the one most representative and the one least representative of his reaction. Reliability, validity, and normative studies are presented, all indicating that this inventory has many potential uses as a clinical and research instrument.
A follow-up study of 120 adult survivors of the Buffalo Creek dam collapse of 1972 showed group changes 14 years after the event. Decreased symptoms were noted in all areas, although significant psychopathology remained in about one-quarter of the survivors. A small group with delayed onset of symptoms was identified.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
