BackgroundWild plants are used as food for human populations where people still depend on natural resources to survive. This study aimed at identifying wild plants and edible uses known in four rural communities of the Pantanal-Brazil, estimating the use value and understanding how distance to the urban areas, gender, age and number of different environments available in the vicinity can influence the knowledge and use of these plants by local people.MethodsData on edible plants with known uses by communities were obtained through semi-structured interviews. A form with standardized information was used for all communities in order to obtain comparable data for analysis. For the quantitative analysis of the factors that could influence the number of species known by the population, a generalized linear model (GLM) was conducted using a negative binomial distribution as the data consisted of counts (number of citations).ResultsA total of 54 wild species were identified with food uses, included in 44 genera and 30 families of angiosperms. Besides food use, the species are also known as medicine, bait, construction, technology and other. The species with the highest use value was Acrocomia aculeata. Older people, aged more than 60 years, and those living in more remote communities farther from cities know more wild edible plants. Statistical analysis showed no difference regarding gender or number of vegetation types available in the vicinity and the number of plants known by locals.ConclusionThis study indicated more knowledge retained in communities more distant from the urban area, indifference in distribution of knowledge between genders and the higher cultural competence of elderly people in respect to knowledge of wild edible botanicals.
The Cerrado flora has an enormous richness, but only 1,5% of its area is protected by law. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the resources it offers which are under heavy risks of extinction, like the medicinal species. Thus, the present study is a review of the information on medicinal species of Mato Grosso, Brazil, aiming to establish a regional data base and consequently start a discussion at national level. A review of the medicinal flora has shown a total of 509 species, belonging to 297 genera and 96 families. The families with the greatest number of species were Asteraceae and Fabaceae (with 7% of the species) and the genera were Hyptis and Tabebuia (eight species). The species with the greatest number of citations were Stryphnodendron adstringens (Mart.) Coville and Anemopaegma arvense (Vell.) Stelf. The preponderance was of arboreal species (31%). The reported values greatly overcome the previous estimates and, considering the areas which have not been covered by regional research in Mato Grosso, it is believed that the present results could be much amplified in the near future.
These systems consist of a combination of trees, shrubs and herbs, sometimes associated with small domestic animals, growing next to residences. To identify the plant species used as food that constitute the home gardens in the town of Rosário Oeste, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, we used qualitative and quantitative methodologies suggested by other ethnobotanical studies. We collected ethnobotanical data by visiting homes and applying the "snow-ball" technique. We identified 94 plant species used as food by the local families. Even though traditional agricultural systems such as home gardens play important ecological roles and conserve high plant species diversity while maintaining these species' genetic variability, these subsistence systems are becoming disarticulated and are losing space to agroindustry and other commercial activities that are of ever increasing economic importance in rural areas.
Multi-taxon surveys were conducted in species-rich, lowland palaeotropical and neotropical forested landscapes in Sumatra, Indonesia and Mato Grosso, Brazil. Gradient-directed transects (gradsects) were sampled across a range of forested land use mosaics, using a uniform protocol to simultaneously record vegetation (vascular plant 123Biodivers Conserv (2013( ) 22:1909( -1930( DOI 10.1007 species, plant functional types (PFTs) and vegetation structure), vertebrates (birds, mammals) and invertebrates (termites), in addition to measuring site and soil properties, including carbon stocks. At both sites similar correlations were detected between major components of structure (mean canopy height, woody basal area and litter depth) and the diversities of plant species and PFTs. A plant species to PFT ratio [spp.:PFTs] was the best overall predictor of animal diversity, especially termite species richness in Sumatra. To a notable extent vegetation structure also correlated with animal diversity. These surrogates demonstrate generic links between habitat structural elements, carbon stocks and biodiversity. They may also offer practical low-cost indicators for rapid assessment in tropical forest landscapes.
Abstract:Abstract: Abstract: Abstract: Abstract: Quack benediction has been used in Europe since the middle ages to treat lots of illness. In Brazil the bezendores appeared during the XVII century and interpretation of their knowledge, traditional use and management of plant resources are commonly addressed in ethnobotanical studies. Braziliam bezendores prescribe plants that can be used as medicine or as an amulet for personal protection. This use of plant material are present in the national popular culture. The present study was carried out at the municipality of Juruena, in Mato Grosso state, and it aimed to understand the importance of benzedeiras, to identify the plants used by them and how they are prescribed and manipulated. To reach the objectives we used techniques of participant-observation, semi-structured interviews and intentional samples. Additionally botanical material were collected and is deposited in the UFMT Herbarium. Four benzedeiras were interviewed between Septembrer/2002 and November of 2003 and they revealed an expressive botanical knowledge relating to quack benediction. They can benzer, prepare and prescribe teas, bottle preparative, medicinal baths and unguents. The illness cited by the benzedeiras was grouped as physical (for example, toothache, bellyache), and spiritual. A total of 87 ethno-species was mentioned arranged in 31 botanical families and between them it is important to pointing out erva-de-Santa-Maria (Chenopodium ambrosioides L.), chapéu-de-couro (Echinodorus macrophyllus Miq.), quina-do-mato (Strychnos sp.), ipê-roxo (Tabebuia heptaphylla (Vell.) Toledo), arruda (Ruta graveolens L.), guiné (Petiveria alliacea L.), comigo-ninguém-pode (Dieffenbachia picta L.). The popular medicine practiced by bezendeiras meets the necessities of people that is looking for the cure for its own problems. Values and cultural heritage are inserted in the "benzimento" and this culture is alive at Juruena. K K K K Keywods eywods eywods eywods eywods: Ethnobotany. Benzedeiras. Plant resources.
