Summary
Muscular degeneration (MD) was produced in pigs experimentally by feeding grain which was associated with field outbreaks.
The manifestations of disease were increased blood‐plasma levels of glutamic‐oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and/or glutamic‐pyruvic trans‐aminase (GPT) but normal ornithin‐carbamyl transferase (OCT), and characteristic changes in skeletal muscle, observed by microscopical examination of biopsy specimens.
Addition of d, l‐α‐tocopherol and sodium selenite to the ration prevented the disease and had probably a curative effect. Protein supplement had no effect.
