Abstract. Four experimental silages were made into bunker silos by adding lactic acid bacteria and cellulase enzyme. The control silages were made without any additives and with AIV II solution (80 % formic acid, 2°/o orthophosphoric acid). The microbial compositions of the experimental silages were studied in five microbial groups; (1) total count of bacteria, (2) lactic acid bacteria, (3) Clostridia, (4) coliform bacteria and (5) fungi (yeasts and moulds).At the beginning of the fermentations enteric bacteria and lactic acid bacteria were increasing. Inoculation of the silage decreased the growth of enterobacteria compared with silages made with cellulase or without additives. This effect was further increased by using AIV II solution. Heterolactic fermentations started in the silages made with cellulase, inoculants and no additives, when initial reducing sugars, primarily glucose and fructose, were fermented. In good ensiling conditions only a few butyric acid forming Clostridia and small amounts of moulds and yests were found. Yeasts existed mostly in silages made with cellulase and with inoculation.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o valor nutritivo da silagem de cana-de-açúcar tratada com 0,5% de uréia e acrescida de 0, 40, 80 e 120 kg de rolão-de-milho/t de cana-de-açúcar picada e ensilada. O experimento foi desenvolvido no Instituto de Zootecnia, em Nova Odessa, SP, em delineamento de blocos completos ao acaso com quatro repetições. O teste de consumo e digestibilidade foi efetuado com ovelhas em gaiolas com coletor e separador de fezes e urina. O teste constou de três períodos de 10, 10 e 5 dias, que corresponderam, respectivamente, aos períodos de adaptação, controle do consumo e coleta. A adição de rolão-de-milho melhorou o padrão de fermentação das silagens. O consumo de matéria seca e fibra insolúvel em detergente neutro, os coeficientes de digestibilidade da matéria seca e fibra insolúvel em detergente neutro, bem como a ingestão de nutrientes digestíveis totais, aumentaram linearmente com a elevação dos níveis de rolão-de-milho adicionados. Nutritive value of sugarcane silage treated with urea and added ground corn earsAbstract The objective of this work was to determine the nutritive value of the silage of sugarcane treated with 0.5% of urea plus 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg of ground corn ears/ton of chopped sugarcane conserved as silage. The experiment was developed at Instituto de Zootecnia, in Nova Odessa, SP, Brazil, according to a randomized complete blocks design, with four replications. Intake and digestibility trials were made in 10, 10 and 5 day periods, corresponding to adaptation, intake and collection periods, respectively, with female sheep. The addition of ground corn ears improved fermentation pattern of the silages. The silage nutritive value measured as dry matter and neutral detergent fiber intake, dry matter and neutral detergent fiber digestibility coefficients and total digestible nutrients intake increased linearly with levels of ground corn ears.

In two experiments conducted over a 2‐year period, oat straw was ensiled with different levels of perennial ryegrass and wet hulless‐barley distillers’ grains (WHDG) to improve utilization efficiency of oat straw as ruminants feed. Firstly, oat straw was ensiled with varying proportions of perennial ryegrass (0, 20, 40 or 60% of fresh weight [FW]). The lactic acid (LA) and lactic/acetic acid (LA/AA) were increased (L, Q, P < 0.01) whereas pH value, propionic acid, butyric acid and volatile fatty acids were decreased (L, Q, P < 0.01) with increasing perennial ryegrass levels. From the perspective of maximum use oat straw, it was suggested that 40% perennial ryegrass inclusions was proper for further study. Then, mixtures of oat straw and perennial ryegrass (60/40) were ensiled with WHDG at 0, 100, 200 or 300 g kg–1 FW (defined as WHDG0, WHDG100, WHDG200 and WHDG300, respectively), the fermentation characteristics and in vitro rumen degradability were analyzed. The dry matter (DM) and pH value declined (L, Q, P < 0.01), while the LA increased (L, Q, P < 0.01) with the increase of WHDG ratios. The inclusion of WHDG significantly decreased ammonia nitrogen concentrations (L, Q, P < 0.01). The crude protein content linearly increased (P < 0.01), whereas the acid detergent fiber (ADF) content linearly decreased (P < 0.01) with increasing levels of WHDG. The WHDG inclusion significantly increased in vitro neutral detergent fiber degradability (L, Q, P < 0.01) with the highest value in WHDG200. The in vitroDM and ADF degradability had a Q effect (P < 0.01) in response to increasing WHDG levels. Overall inclusion of WHDG can improve the fermentation and in vitro degradability of mixed silages of oat straw and perennial ryegrass.
