Natural fiber composites have experienced a renaissance in the last two decades as a response to societal demands for developing eco‐friendly, biodegradable and recyclable materials. They are now being extensively used in everyday products as well as in automotive, packaging, sports and construction industries. Hemp fiber is being used in most of these products because of its superior mechanical properties. Like other natural fibers, hemp fibers require modifications in order to improve their properties and interfacial bonding with polymer matrices, and to reduce their hydrophilic character. These modification methods can be grouped into three major categories: chemical, physical and biological. Chemical methods use chemical reagents to reduce fibers' hydrophilic tendency and thus improve compatibility with the matrix. They also expose more reactive groups on the fiber surface to facilitate efficient coupling with the matrix. Physical methods change structural and surface properties of the fiber and thereby influence the interfacial bonding with matrices, without extensively changing the chemical composition of the fibers. They are cleaner and simpler than the chemical methods. Biological methods use biological agents like fungi, enzymes and bacteria to modify the fiber surface properties. These methods are not toxic like chemical methods and are not energy‐intensive like physical methods. This paper presents an overview of recent developments in these methods. It is concluded that these methods almost invariably result in improvement in fiber/matrix interfacial bonding, resulting in increase in mechanical properties of the composites.

Cinnamic acids have been prepared in moderate to high yields by a new direct synthesis using aromatic aldehydes and aliphatic carboxylic acids, in the presence of boron tribromide as reagent, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (4-DMAP) and pyridine (Py) as bases and N-methyl-2-pyrolidinone (NMP) as solvent, at reflux (180-190°C) for 8-12 hours.

Wood surface modification is a comprehensive concept which, in time, turned out to be as successful as challenging when it comes to improve the resistance of wood during its life cycle in both indoor and outdoor applications. The initial approaches have aimed at simple methods with immediate results. Nowadays, the paradigm has slightly changed due to the scientific and technical advances, and some methods has become intermediate stages in more complex processes, after being used, for long time, as stand-alone procedures. The esterification was employed as a convenient method for wood surface modification due to the high amount of free hydroxyl groups available at the surface of wood and other lignocellulosic materials. Therefore, different esterification approaches were tested: activated condensation with carboxylic acids (monocarboxylic, as well as dicarboxylic acids, fatty acids, etc.) in the presence of condensation activating agents (such as trifluoroacetic anhydride); reaction with β-halogen-substituted carboxylic acids; esterification using carboxylic acids derivatives (acyl chlorides, anhydrides) or even multifunctional carboxylic acids (i.e., tricine). Thus, wood with improved dimensional stability and weathering resilience, higher fire resistance, enhanced hydrophobic character, and mechanical durability was obtained. This paper offers an overview of some of the most recent advances reported in the field, presented in a systematic manner, using the type of reaction as classification criterion. The main improvements will be outlined in a critical assessment in order to provide an useful tool for a wise choice in future applications.

Electrical and mechanical properties of some new composites made of copolyamide/polypropylene/carbon nanotubes (CPA/PP/CNTs) in different ratios, in correlation with their morphology, were investigated. The polymer blends based on polypropylene and low melting point copolyamide filled with CNTs were prepared by two methods. In the first procedure, CNTs were orderly distributed into the heterogeneous polymer matrix where filler occupied only one polymer component creating a highly branched conductive phase that provides a low value of the percolation threshold. In second case, CNTs were randomly distributed in the heterogeneous polymer matrix created by the blend CPA/PP yielding in a higher value of percolation threshold. Four factors influence on the distribution of filler, namely: thermodynamics, kinetics, chemical factor, and processing. Both electrical and mechanical properties are defined by spatial distribution of the conductive nanofiller in the polymer blend. POLYM. COMPOS., 37:2467-2477, FIG. 2. Bismaleimides with main chains of different structures were prepared by the reaction between maleic anhydride and various diamines and by the reaction between 4-maleimidobenzoylchloride and 3,5-dihidroxybenzoic acid. The monomers were characterized with IR and 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. Polymers based on these compounds were prepared through the Michael addition of diamines to bismaleimides. The thermal characterization of the monomers and polymers was performed with differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic thermogravimetric analysis.

Raw cellulose, or even agro-industrial waste, have been extensively used for environmental applications, namely industrial water decontamination, due to their effectiveness, availability, and low production cost. This was a response to the increasing societal demand for fresh water, which made the purification of wastewater one of the major research issue for both academic and industrial R&D communities. Cellulose has undergone various derivatization reactions in order to change the cellulose surface charge density, a prerequisite condition to delaminate fibers down to nanometric fibrils through a low-energy process, and to obtain products with various structures and properties able to undergo further processing. Selective oxidation of cellulose, one of the most important methods of chemical modification, turned out to be a multitask platform to obtain new high-performance, versatile, cellulose-based materials, with many other applications aside from the environmental ones: in biomedical engineering and healthcare, energy storage, barrier and sensing applications, food packaging, etc. Various methods of selective oxidation have been studied, but among these, (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl) (TEMPO)-mediated and periodate oxidation reactions have attracted more interest due to their enhanced regioselectivity, high yield and degree of substitution, mild conditions, and the possibility to further process the selectively oxidized cellulose into new materials with more complex formulations. This study systematically presents the main methods commonly used for the selective oxidation of cellulose and provides a survey of the most recent reports on the environmental applications of oxidized cellulose, such as the removal of heavy metals, dyes, and other organic pollutants from the wastewater.
