Résumé L'hallucination négative est une notion discutée. L'auteur montre que pour ébauchée qu'elle soit dans la théorie de Freud, elle y occupe tout de même une place importante, plus qu'une simple notion descriptive. Freud n'a-t-il pas suggéré de commencer par l'hallucination négative pour comprendre l'hallucination en général ? L'auteur souhaite justifier sa valeur théorique à partir d'arguments cliniques ; même s'il s'agit habituellement de manifestations fugaces, évanescentes par définition, celles-ci se présentent à des moments mutatifs chez certains patients : toxicomanes, sujets aux acting-out ou aux somatisations, dépressifs ou cyclothymiques. Située entre l'hallucination et le refoulement, entre le déni et le contre-investissement traumatique, elle occupe une place de carrefour dans de nombreuses pathologies limites. Deux exemples cliniques l'illustreront. Sur le plan métapsychologique, l'hallucination négative est l'héritière de l'expérience de la souffrance, comme l'hallucination positive est l'héritière de la satisfaction. Elle contribue donc à la construction des représentations, dont elle constitue le cadre. En cas de traumatismes, d'afflux excessifs d'excitations, elle assure une contention d'urgence, coûteuse en énergie, rapidement relayée par d'autres mécanismes, au premier rang desquels est le déni. L'auteur propose d'ailleurs l'hypothèse que l'hallucination négative est aux différentes manifestations du déni ou de l'agir ce que le refoulement est aux différents symptômes névrotiques.
