ABSTRACT. The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major pest of maize crops in Brazil. The effects of plant metabolites on the biology and behavior of insects is little studied. The aim of the study was to evaluate the activity of rutin on the biology of the S. frugiperda by using artificial diets containing rutin. The study evaluated four treatments: regular diet (control group) and diets containing 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mg g -1 of rutin. The following biological variables parameters of the larvae were evaluated daily: development time (days), larval and pupal weight (g) and viability (%), adult longevity and total life cycle (days). A completely randomized experimental design was used with 25 replication. The rutin flavonoid negatively affected the biology of S. frugiperda by prolonging the larval development time, reducing the weight of larvae and pupae and decreasing the viability of the pupae. The addition of different concentrations of rutin prolonged the S. frugiperda life cycle. The use of plant with insecticidal activity has the potential with strategy in IPM.Keywords: fall armyworm, insecticide plant, secondary metabolite, flavonoid. A lagarta Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E.
The association of insect-resistant plants with biological control is important in integrated management to reduce the density of pests below the economic injury level. The behavior, development, and prédation of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were studied with the prey Spodoptera frugiperda (J, E. Smith, 1797) fed on the leaves of the cotton cultivars 'NuOpal' (transgenic), 'DeltaOpal,' 'EMX 910,' 'EMX 993,' or 'FMX 996' (conventional). The attraction of P. nigrispinus to S. frugiperda larvae fed on different cotton cultivars was similar. The prédation of nymphs and adults, and the life cycle of the P. nigrispinus predator were higher for S. frugiperda larvae fed on the NuOpal; however, the total viability of P, nigrispinus was lower when predating on S. frugiperda fed the NuOpal. S, frugiperda acquires toxins from transgenic cotton, which can affect its natural predator P. nigrispinus.

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a limiting factor in soybean production in the North Central region of the USA. The objectives of this work were to identify sources of resistance to A. glycines in 14 soybean genotypes, and also document changes in total protein, peroxidase, and chlorophyll in response to aphid feeding. A reduced number of A. glycines was observed on the genotypes UX 2569-159-2-01 and UX 2570-171- 04, indicating the presence of antixenosis and/or antibiosis. UX 2569-159-2-01 expressed the highest level of resistance; whereas, UX 2570-171-04 had moderate levels of resistance to A. glycines. Chlorophyll content was relatively unaffected by A. glycines, except for a reduction in UX 2569-159-2-01 infested plants at 5 and 15 days after infestation (DAI). No changes were detected in total protein content between infested and control plants for the genotypes analyzed; however, peroxidase activity was higher in infested UX 2570-171-04 at both 5 and 10 DAI. This improvement in peroxidase content in infested UX 2570-171-04 may be playing multiple roles in the plant tolerance.
EntomoBrasilis 7 (1): 05-11 (2014) EcologiaResumo. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of abiotic factors on the population dynamics of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.,) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in three sowing seasons on bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The assays were set up from June 2010 to April 2012 and conducted in the Departamento de Fitossanidade at FCAV/UNESP -Campus of Jaboticabal, SP. The studies of the population dynamics of B. tabaci biotype B were performed weekly through infestation assessments of eggs, nymphs and adults of the whitefly on 18 samplings, six for each sowing season: "winter", "water" and "dry", in addition to the influence of the abiotic factors weekly temperature and relative humidity (minimum, average and maximum) and accumulated rainfall. These variables were correlated to the total number of eggs, nymphs and adults of the whitefly through Pearson's linear correlation analysis. Among the obtained results, the population peaks of B. tabaci biotype B occurred at the "water" season, followed by "winter" and "dry" seasons, and the abiotic factors temperature and relative humidity influenced negatively the population dynamics of the whitefly.
-The velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner attacks peanut leaves, and the use of resistant varieties has directly contributed to ecological and economic aspects of pest control. The aim of this work was to select resistant peanut genotypes to A. gemmatalis using cluster analyses (dendogram obtained by Ward's methods and K-means) and Principal Components analysis for data interpretation. The evaluated genotypes were: IAC 5, IAC 8112, IAC 22 and IAC Tatu ST with upright growth habit, and IAC 147, IAC 125, IAC Caiapó and IAC Runner 886 with runner growth habit, and soybean genotype BR 16 as a susceptible control. The biological parameters: leaf consumption, larval (4 o instar) and pupal (24h old) weight, larval and pupal development time and adult longevity were evaluated at laboratory conditions. The genotypes IAC 147 and IAC Runner 886 were resistant to A. gemmatalis in both cluster tests, grouping apart from most of the other genotypes. Both dendrogram and K-means methods provided satisfactory biological explanation, and they can be complementary used together with Principal Component and vice-versa.
