Objective: to analyze the care and management demands of Long-Term Care Facilities for the Elderly (LTCFs) in Brazil. Method: an integrative review of literature was carried out, organized into six stages: a) elaboration of a guiding question; b) online search of LILACS, SciELO, PubMed, the CAPES Portal and the Brazilian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology databases; c) article selection, following the exclusion and inclusion criteria, with the sample composed of 17 articles; d) commented analysis of the selected articles; e) deliberation on the results obtained, formulated from the synthesis and interpretation of the selected studies; f) presentation of the results of the review. Results: the care demands identified are related to the process of caring and assume a working team with geriatric and gerontological knowledge, while the management demands include the means and resources needed so the care can be provided effectively. However, the LTCFs were found to rely on professionals who are unprepared to provide care or to assume an organizational management role, meaning care for the elderly is restricted to the essentials for their basic needs. Conclusion: the care demands were easily identified in the analyzed publications, however, there is a lack of research that evaluates management demands in a broader and more in-depth manner. It is suggested that studies aiming to broaden theoretical knowledge of the care and management demands of LTCFs are carried out, to stimulate effective and positive actions in the practices of these institutions, seeking to offer top quality care to elderly persons that live in these facilities, that responds to the real needs of their current stage of life.

The objective of this study was to compare the professional identity perceptions among undergraduate students enrolled in predominantly female and male courses. The research method is cross-sectional and the sample consisted of 502 undergraduate students in the fields of health and engineering. A questionnaire with the Scale of Professional Self and Hetero-Perception (EAHP) was used to collect the data and descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, and structural equations modeling were used as analysis techniques. According to the students from the two areas, the dimensions that best describe their professions are dynamism; technicity; effort; and ethics, while in the health field, the dimension that received the lowest average score was recognition, indicating that the professionals working in this field resent the lack of respect, admiration, and prestige in society, despite perceiving themselves as honest, honored, productive, and hardworking. Also, the average hetero-perception scores were lower for the health students and the difference between self and hetero-perception was less significant among the engineering students. The results confirm that the professional identities include gender-related attributes, leading to the conclusion that health professions remain vulnerable to gender domination relations.

This study aimed to analyze the narratives of health professionals working in a Emergency Care Unit that deal with decision making in situations of scarce resources. An exploratory research, of a qualitative nature, was carried out through a narrative interview technique with 25 professionals. Three categories emerged from the study: Decision making in the face of scarce resources; Ethical conflicts; Academic p reparation for confrontation and the sentimental framework. Prioritization of patients is a reality in this health service. The prevalent problems are the scarcity of materials and medicines and the lack of human resources. The discourse preached the lack of ethical preparation of the academy for decision making. Most of the interviewees believe that they had little preparation to face the reality of the service. Some interviewees showed feelings of regret, impotence, insecurity, desire to abandon service, anguish and personal conflicts in the face of the wear and tear caused by the situation. It is necessary to invest in constant dialogues, health education and awareness-raising strategies in order to contribute to consensual actions that best subsidize dec ision-making in situations of scarce resources and that favor equitable health care in order to maximize benefits and reorient processes job.

Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo descrever o processo de elaboração e validação de construto de um instrumento utilizado para avaliar as competências de gestores da área da saúde. Na primeira etapa, as competências foram mapeadas com o auxílio de 29 professores da área da saúde. Na segunda etapa, 102 gestores responderam ao questionário. Para a depuração da base, procedeu-se à análise descritiva e multivariada dos dados. Adicionalmente, realizou-se a análise da dimensionalidade, da confiabilidade e da validade da escala, resultando em 20 competências técnicas, distribuídas em cinco eixos temáticos: economia e demografia; política, planejamento e avaliação em saúde; gestão do trabalho e educação em saúde; administração e contabilidade; e metodologias estruturantes. As competências comportamentais mapeadas totalizaram 16 e foram distribuídas nos eixos: idealista/perfeccionista; artesão/negociador' prestativo/ guardião; e motivador/racional.
