Objectives: Noninvasive diagnosis of cancer bladder remains a challenge. The study aimed to evaluate the urinary gene expression of NDRG-2 (N-Myc downstream-regulated gene2) and MCM8 (the mini chromosome maintenance proteins) genes and their importance as novel urinary biomarkers for bladder cancer. In addition, to assess their diagnostic value in comparison with voided urine cytology is the focus of this work. Methods: the study included twenty healthy controls and fifty patients with bladder cancer. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and voided urine cytology (VUC) were performed to demonstrate the NDRG2 and MCM-8 gene expression levels in the urine of healthy controls and bladder cancer patients. Results: There was a statistically significant decrease in NDRG-2 gene expression in bladder cancer group (4.38±0.66) compared to the control group (8.29±1.67). Gene expression of MCM-8 showed a statistically significant increase in bladder cancer group (5.57±0.79) in comparison to control group (4.55±1.39) with a significant negative correlation (ρ= -0.77) between NDRG-2 expression levels and tumor grade in cancer group (p<0.001), and a positive significant correlation (ρ=0.453) between MCM-8 expression levels and tumor grade in cancer group (p=0.001). NDRG-2 had the highest ability to predict bladder carcinoma (AUC of 1.0). In addition, the most precise differentiation between non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) and muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) with AUC of 0.814. Conclusion: Expression of NDRG-2 and MCM-8 may be novel potential noninvasive biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of bladder cancer and a good tool for differentiation between NMIBC and MIBC with NDRG-2 is the most precise for diagnosis and differentiation over MCM-8, VUC and combined use of NDRG-2 and MCM-8.

Glucocorticoids is the most common cause of secondary osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is widespread, costly and causes pain, deformity and disability. Several studies report health benefits of raisins. Raisins have a combination of compounds with antibacterial, antioxidant,anticarcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties. The present study investigated the impact of Raisins onmethylprednisolone-induced osteoporosis in rats. Thirty male albino rats were randomly divided into three main groups, ten rats each. Group I control group; Group II, osteoporotic group, where osteoporosis was induced by injection of methylprednisolone; Group III, protected group, animals were given raisinsconcomitant daily with methylprednisolone. Bone biochemical markers were assisted, hydroxyproline, urinary calcium excretion, serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin. In addition to histological findings in lumbar vertebrae of the rats.Our findings showed that raisin has a positive osteoprotective effects on methylprednisolone induced bone changes histologically and over the biomarkers examined.This study suggests that dietary raisins may moderate methylprednisolone bone induced changes.

BACKGROUND: Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) uptake may primarily cause adverse effects by inducing oxidative stress, resulting in cell damage, genotoxicity, inflammation, and immune response. To date, there are limited studies investigating the adverse effect of TiO2 NPs on liver health and no studies found a naturally occurring compound able to ameliorate such effect. Thus, this study investigated alpha lipoic acid (ALA) potential for reversing the biochemical and histopathological changes that TiO2 NPs exposure causes in rat liver.METHODS: Thirty adult male albino rats were divided into: control rats received distilled water, control rats treated with 50 mg/kg ALA, rats intoxicated with TiO2 NPs, and TiO2 NPs-intoxicated rats treated 50 mg/kg ALA. Rats were sacrificed before blood samples were collected to assess the liver function using parameters of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin, albumin and total protein. Liver tissue homogenates were prepared to assess hepatic antioxidant and oxidative stress using parameters of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Liver tissue sections were used for histopathological analysis and caspase-3 immunohistochemical analysis.RESULTS: TiO2 NPs produced deleterious effects on rat liver tissue, as confirmed through biochemical results, caspase-3 immunohistochemistry, and histological alterations. TiO2 NPs intoxication induced hepatocyte vacuolation, blood vessels congestion, biliary proliferation, apoptosis, and fibrosis. However, ALA treatment of TiO2 NPs-intoxicated rats significantly alleviated deleterious impact on the liver.CONCLUSION: Administration of 600 mg/kg TiO2 NPs to rats resulted in hepatic degenerative lesions, depletion of GSH, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. However, these changes were mitigated by ALA administration. Background: Phthalates are known to be major environmental hazards. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a commonly used phthalate ester, is present in a variety of products. Humans can be exposed to DBP from various sources, which can release it into biological fluids and cause various health problems by penetrating different tissues in the body. Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of DBP on pulmonary alveoli in rats and to assess the mitigating influence of S. platensis. Methods: The study involved 30 young adult male albino rats, which were divided into 3 groups (n = 10 each): control, group II (rats treated with phthalate ester (DBP; 50 mg/kg body weight/day)), and group III (Spirulina-protected animals given phthalate ester (DBP; 50 mg/kg body weight + Spirulina (200 mg/kg body weight/day)). Results: The study revealed that alveolar tissues in the groups treated with DBP showed significant increases in collagen deposition and inflammatory cellular infiltration. Furthermore, the numbers of type-II pneumocytes and alveolar macrophages were significantly increased. However, most of these effects were ameliorated by Spirulina platensis. Conclusion: These findings suggest that Spirulina may have potentially beneficial effects on pulmonary alveoli by mitigating the toxic effects of DBP.
