The use of a regenerative procedure is indicated in the treatment of deep vertical bony defects since both the regenerative techniques (GTR and EMD) in the present study resulted in clinically and statistically significant improvements in clinical parameters compared to the access flap procedure. The use of EMP can be helpful in esthetically-sensitive sites and in reducing patient morbidity.
The comparative study was carried out on a sample of 15 patients treated with two mouthwashes both containing 0.2% chlorhexidine, but different in that the first does not contain ADS, which is instead present in the second, a new product. The results obtained show that in the 15 patients treated, there is no statistically significant difference in the ability of the mouthwash to prevent bacterial plaque, however evidence of the stain was much less with the new mouthwash.
The Drosophila eggshell provides a model system for studying the assembly of extracellular matrix. Eggshell formation is a complex process that requires time-coordinated synthesis, cleavage, and transport of various proteins and finally cross-linking mediated by particular functional domains. It has been suggested that the eggshell can act as a storage site for spatial cues involved in embryonic pattern formation. Its structural components are synthesized in the somatic follicle cells in a precise temporally and spatially regulated manner. This review will summarize our knowledge of eggshell gene expression. We will discuss the amplification of the chorion gene clusters and the data acquired on the expression patterns and the regulatory elements controlling transcription of eggshell genes. We will then focus on the findings that correlate follicular epithelium patterning and eggshell gene expression, and discuss the interesting perspectives of an involvement in eggshell assembly of embryonic patterning cues. In the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of control and chronic adult periodontitis (CAP) patients there is a spontaneous release of O2- radicals from polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). The addition of the exogenous stimuli phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) decreased the O2-. formation in control GCF, while in CAP patients produced a marked enhancement of O2-. generation. The circulating PMN of control subjects did not show a spontaneous O2-. formation, differently from CAP patients. On the contrary, a similar O2-. production was measured when the circulating PMN were stimulated with PMA. Moreover, the antioxidant activity measured in 10 microliters of cell free gingival supernatant (GS) of control and CAP patients had the same values by inhibiting 12.6% and 18.9% respectively of the O2- formation supported by a xanthine/xanthine oxidase system. Probably, the protective or destructive effect of PMN in GCF of CAP patients depends on the variations of the rate of O2- formation in respect to the intrinsic antioxidant property of GS.
We have analysed the chromatin structure of the ade6 gene of Schizosaccharomyces pombe and its flanking regions both in the chromosome and in plasmids. The chromatin structure is independent of the chromosomal or extrachromosomal location. The ade6 gene contains eight precisely positioned nucleosomes on the 5' half, 'not positioned' nucleosomes around the 3' end and a nuclease-sensitive promoter region. Precisely positioned nucleosomes, but no nuclease-sensitive region were also detected on the ura4 gene in the chromosome and on a plasmid. The results show that S. pombe chromosomal and extrachromosomal genes have chromatin structures similar to those of S. cerevisiae and higher eukaryotes.
The results suggest that GO necessarily develops in responders within 6 months from heart transplantation and in most subjects may be a time-related side-effect probably due to a progressive reduction in the sensitivity of the periodontum to CsA.
The incidence of gingival overgrowth secondary to the administration of cyclosporine A (CsA) is widely reported in renal transplant recipients, while there is no information about periodontal conditions in heart transplant patients. In the present cross-sectional investigation the relationship between clinical periodontal conditions and pharmacological profiles of CsA was determined in 39 patients (31 male and 8 female, aged 18-63 years, mean 45.6 +/- 15.2 years) who possessed their 6 upper and 6 lower anterior teeth. All patients had been on a CsA-based immunosoppression regimen for at least 6 months (6-101, mean 39.3 +/- 30.1). 2 periodontal parameters (recorded on the 12 anterior teeth only) relating to gingival overgrowth were considered: hyperplastic index and % of sites with probing depth > 3 mm. These parameters were always recorded by the same observer at first appointment and 2 months after an oral hygiene programme. Both non parametric statistical analysis (Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis by rank, Wicoxon signed rank-test and Mann Whitney U-test) and parametric analysis (stepwise multiple regression analysis, one-sample and two-sample t-test) were used to investigate the relationship between the periodontal parameters (dependent variables) and a series of independent variables: age, sex, plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), CsA dose, CsA blood level, duration of therapy (months since allograft). Results failed to demonstrate any significant correlation between gingival overgrowth and age, sex, CsA dose or CsA blood level, PI. A positive significant correlation was found between periodontal conditions and GI and a significant inverse correlation between periodontal conditions and duration of therapy, suggesting that the relation between CsA therapy and gingival overgrowth in heart-transplant patients could be time-related and the negative influence of the drug on the periodontal status could spontaneously decrease over time.
