Vor 10 Jahren hat der eine von uns zum 60. Qeburtstag von H. B i l t z in dieser Zeitschrift eine kurze Abhandlung ,,Uber die Oxydation der Harnsaure-glykole'( l) veroffentlicht und der Verdienste gedacht, die H.Biltz sich um den Ausbau der Harnsaurechemie erworben hat. Mit gleichbleibender Scbaffensfreude hat H. Biltz seitdem auch Arbeiten angeregt, gefordert und unterstutzt, die auf ganz anderem Gebiete lagen. Im alten Breslauer Institute, das seit den Zeiten A. L a d e n b u r g s baulich nicht mehr verandert wurde und dessen Etat nur knapp fur Unterrichtszwecke ausreicht, wurden moderne Untersuchungen uberhaupt nur durch ihn ermoglicht. H. B i l t z hat uns mit seiner ganzen Zahigkeit stets darin geholfen, von wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaften und aus der Industrie die experimentellen Hilfsmittel zu erhalten, die fur die Arbeit nun eben unbedingt nijtig sind; vor allem aber hat er mit gleichbleibendem Verstandnis und strengster Kritik alle unsere Untersuchungen verfolgt. Wir danken ihm heute dafur, der jetzt nur nach dem Kalender 70 Jahre alt wird; wir verehren ihn als Personlichkeit, weil wir ihn in menschlichen wie wissenschaftlichen Dingen immer als einen Mann kennenlernten, der sehr schwer zu uberzeugen, aber d a m auch durch nichts von dem fur richtig Erkannten abzubringen wax; wir wiinschen ihm, daB er noch viele Fruchte, zu denen er den Samen gelegt hat, reifen sehen l) H. Baud 143. 1935 moge; wir freuen uns, ihm im folgenden heute unsere Erfahrungen mit einer Methodik der Nikrohydrierung darlegen zu konnen, die es uns gestattet, mit 1-3 mg Substanz die anzahl der Doppelbindungen genau festzustellen. Unsere Methode der Mikrohydrierung schlieBt sich aufs engste an die von J. H. C. S m i t h beschriebenen Versuche2) an, die, soweit uns bekannt, bisher nicht weiter erprobt und angewandt worden sind. Sie erscheint uns nach einigen Veranderungen, die wir im Laufe der letzten 2 Jahre vorgenommen haben, durchaus geeignet, eine allgemeine Anwendung zu finden, so daB wir unsere speziellen Erfahrungen mit dem Verfahren an Hand einer genauen Skizze des Apparates in der von uns jetzt benutzten Form, einer Tabelle und einiger Kurven kurz mitteilen wollen.2, J.
