Hoewel de replieken op ons essay anders doen vermoeden, kunnen wij spreken van een geslaagd essay. De Belgische filosofe Patrica de Martelaere omschreef filosofie ooit als ‘krabben waar het jeukt’. Als we ergens in zijn geslaagd, dan is het wel om ergens aan gekrabd te hebben. Daar zijn essays ook voor, ze nodigen uit tot debat.

on (practice-based) qualitative
research in the Netherlands shows
that the described criteria for validity
are mainly derived from a quantitative
perspective. As a consequence, the
voice of the researcher dominates in
the research instead of the voice of the
research respondents. It is argued that
in the age of Facebook and considering
the current legitimization crisis of
science, practice-based qualitative
researchers need validation criteria
that respect the polyvocality of the
respondents.
We herkennen onze boodschap niet in de wijze waarop Verschuren reageert. Ons artikel was een essay waarin we veelgebruikte literatuur over praktijkgericht kwalitatief onderzoek op kwaliteitseisen hebben beschouwd. Als kader daarvoor hebben we een rubricering van kwaliteitseisen van Sparkes (2001) gebruikt. Onze kernboodschap is dat onze analyse van de door ons bestudeerde literatuur over praktijkgericht kwalitatief onderzoek duidelijk maakt dat daarin kwaliteitseisen worden gehanteerd die objectiviteit, theorie-sensitiviteit en generaliseerbaarheid vooropstellen. Deze oriëntatie op kwaliteit valt binnen het replicatie- perspectief en parallelle perspectief van Sparkes (2001), waarmee ons duidelijk werd dat in de bestudeerde literatuur toch vooral een kwantitatief (lees eventueel positivistisch) perspectief op onderzoek doorslaggevend is. We zetten daar vraagtekens bij en suggereren een ander perspectief op kwaliteitseisen, zeker indien kwalitatief onderzoek relevante (wetenschappelijke) kennis voor en met een dynamische praktijk moet opleveren. Overigens, we spreken in ons essay over praktijkgericht kwalitatief onderzoek, omdat de literatuur die we aanhalen zelf spreekt over praktijkgerichtheid.
