A good speech has the power in presenting the rhetorical argument, therefore it is required a study corresponds to the speech preparation with rhetorical techniques to argue, especially in the presidential speech of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo of reform era in the field of education. The research method was the critical discourse analysis method of Norman Fairclough model. Data collection techniques used were documentation techniques, note-taking techniques, and interviews. Data analysis techniques were administered by connecting micro, meso, and macro elements in dimensions: (a) text, (b) discourse practice, and (b) socio-cultural practices. The results show that President Joko Widodo and his team used the argument technique: 1) The introduction has two patterns: (a) claim and ground; and (b) claims. 2) The trunk or content section has a pattern: (a) claim and ground; (b) claim, ground, and claim; (c) claim, ground, and warrant; (d) claim, ground, and possible; and (e) claim, ground, warrant and backing with each sub topic or argument, minimally and dominantly comprising claim and ground. 3) The closing section has a pattern: (a) claim, ground, and claim; (b) claim. The rhetorical technique of arguing in a presidential speech aims at explaining the plans of educational programs, undertaken educational programs, and the promise and expectation to improve the quality of education in Indonesia during the reform era.
This study aimed at investigating and understanding the cultural values in texts of English coursebooks in Ambon, Moluccas, Indonesia. The researchers used content analysis method to analyze data in depth, detailed, and complete about the cultural values. The result of this research revealed that the cultural values from texts view found in the English coursebooks were prestige, honesty, discipline, alignment, individuality, diversity, hard-working, generosity, creativity, beauty, equality, fighting spirit, mutual help, caring, proud, independent, and belief. Thus, there were three dominant values that are, diversity, beauty, and alignment. Those results lead to implication that English teacher can apply the cultural values in teaching processes. Then, for the further language researchers can conduct related research on the impact of the cultural values to the attitude and the teenagers' age.
The goal of research was to achieve a deep comprehension of English speech acts of illocutionary force. The method applied was ethnography of communication. In relation with an approach, I applied the qualitative one. In the data collection procedures, I applied the ethnography method, i.e. field observation, recording, transcription, interview, and field notes. In analyzing the data, I used the model of communication analysis, such as analysis of: communication situation, communication events, and communication acts. The findings showed that (1) the realization of speech acts of illocutionary directive had been the dominant one, (2) the realization of Grice's maxims had been conducted "Good" as shown by the achievement index of 78. 431 %, while the hit of maxims reached the index of 21.569 %, (3) the realization of direct and indirect speech acts proved that the question intonation (Ok?
The objective of this research is to acquire deep understanding about social values in the novels Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens. The type of research was qualitative by using content analysis method. The data collected through document study and data observation about social values in the novel. The result of this research revealed that social values found and described in the novel Oliver Twist were love values consist of love and affection, dedication, mutual help, kinship, concern, and loyalty. Responsible values consist of sense of acceptance and belonging, obligations and discipline. Harmony of life values consist of justice, tolerance, cooperation, and democracy. The values were found and described through generic structure of the novel by the text quotations. Those results led to implication that Indonesian literature educators can apply Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist directly in the teaching process and motivate the students to analyze the novels.
This study is aimed to developing a Moodle-based speaking learning model for Students of Technology Department at Teacher Training and Education Higher School of Muhammadiyah Kuningan. Moodle is one of the Learning Management System. It is developed by lecturers in making teaching and learning well. The English materials given is English for Specific Purposes. It tends to the English learning given to the non-English department students. Teaching ESP is started by diagnosing the situations of class by means of need analysis based on Dudley-Evans and St. John’s Model. Dudley-Evans and St John’s model consists of seven aspects; personal information about learners, language information about target situation, learners’ lack, learners’ needs from course, language learning needs, how to communicate in the target situation, and professional information about learners. The steps are based on Borg and Gall’s model. The steps are collecting data, planning, developing first draft of product, testing the developed product, revising the developed product and revising the final draft of product. The data is collected by questionnaire, interview, group discussion, observation, documentation, and speaking test. Quantitative and qualitative are used in analyzing data. The result of this research is the effectiveness of learning speaking by using Moodle. Theexperimental research is used to investigate the effectiveness of Moodle in learning. It indicates that the Moodle-based Speaking Learning Model improves the students’ speaking skill at ESP Lecture for the Students of Teacher Training and Education Higher School of Muhammadiyah Kuningan.
