A B S T R A C TArugula is a vegetable that has gained more highlight in the consumption, being rich in potassium, sulfur, iron, omega-3 and vitamins A and C. Availability of water and nutrients are limiting factors for production of this crop. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the production of arugula subjected to different irrigation depths and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conduct between August and September 2015. The experimental design was completely randomized in split-plot scheme. Irrigation depths L 1 , L 2 , L 3 and L 4 (25, 50, 75 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration, respectively) represented the plots and potassium doses K 1 and K 2 (200 and 400 kg ha -1 , respectively) represented the subplots. Although the highest yield was obtained with highest irrigation depth and highest potassium dose, it is recommended the cultivation of arugula with the lowest irrigation depth and the lowest potassium dose, considering the higher value of water use efficiency for this treatment.
Genotypic correlation and path analysis of kale half-sib progeniesAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the associations between traits in half-sib families of kale, through genotypic correlation and path analysis, and possible effects of truncated selection. Thirteen traits were evaluated in 24 half-sib families of kale. Four path analysis were carried out, considering the following basic variables: plant height, number of shoots, number of leaves per plant, and stem diameter. Each analysis included 12 traits as explicative variables. The highest estimates of correlation were found between the following traits: length and width of petioles; number of leaves; leaf fresh weight; and length and width of the leaves. The selection for the smallest number of shoots leads to a reduction of petiole length; for the highest number of leaves, selection provides the increase of leaf fresh weight and the reduction of fresh weight per leaf; and, for the largest stem diameter, selection causes the production increase of fresh leaf weight. The truncated selection for plant height does not cause significant changes in the other evaluated traits.
Despite the shortage of water resources be evident worldwide, turning prosperous lands into unproductive and affecting the existence of humidity, there is a great fraction of producers who still do not implement the proper management of the irrigation water in their properties. The poor management of irrigation is still a reality for most of the producers located in Brazil Middle Cerrado, which continue irrigating the tomato crop using empirical methods, resulting in economic, environmental and social damage. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different irrigation depths and different times of suspension in irrigation during the ripening stage in tomato in productivity and quality of fruit for processing. The experiment was conducted under a Center pivot irrigation system and a split plot experimental design. The study showed that the higher irrigation depth (100% of ETc) resulted in higher yield (104 t ha -1 ) with lower soluble solids. The irrigation suspension at the beginning of fruit maturation increased soluble solids accumulation (4.2°Brix), providing higher quality and production of fruits to tomato industry.
Kale has a long vegetative cycle, requiring a lot of labor, due to the need for tutoring, thinning and multiple harvests, leading to difficulties in the maintenance and evaluation of experiments. Thus, the objective was to estimate the minimum number of evaluations for the assertive selection of half-sib progenies of kale by means of a repeatability study by Bayesian approach. Twenty four half-sib progenies were evaluated in a randomized block design with four replicates and five plants per plot. The number of shoots, number of marketable leaves, fresh mass of marketable leaves and fresh mass per leaf were measured throughout 15 harvests. All traits showed high estimates of the repeatability, indicating high regularity in the expression of the traits during the harvesting period. With eight harvests it is possible to evaluate all the traits with a coefficient of determination superior to 85% in half-sib progenies of kale.
This study aimed to evaluate the biometric and productive characteristics of carrot (Daucus carota L.) under different irrigation levels and soil covers. Experiments were carried out at the Federal University of Viçosa in 2019 and 2020, to evaluate the effect of five irrigation levels (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of the daily irrigation depth) and soil coverings (control, plastic mulching, and paper mulching), on the variables soil moisture (U), actual water consumption (AWC), root length (R) and diameter (D), leaf height (H) and temperature (T), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), yield (Y) and dry root biomass (DB). Irrigation management was performed with tensiometers. There was no significant interaction (P < 0.05) between the factors. Irrigation significantly influenced D, H, T, NDVI, Y, and DB, while the soil cover treatment affected R, D, H, NDVI, Y, and DB. The highest yields were found in 100% irrigation (34.89 t ha -1 ) and with paper mulching (30.55 t ha -1 ). The results can guide future adaptations to the carrot production system currently in force in Brazil. As for biometric characteristics, yield, and sustainability in the use of water for irrigation were studied.
The population dynamics of weeds due to different fertilization management systems is essential in the agricultural areas for the understanding of their interference and possible damages. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different fertilization management systems on the weed community through phytosociological analyzes in lettuce and carrot crops grown in succession. The experimental design was a randomized block design, with eight treatments and four replications in each plant, following the same experimental layout. The treatments, referring to different management of fertilization were: Conventional; With Weeds; No Weeds; Compound; Crotalaria; Crotalaria more Compound; Lab-Lab and Lab-Lab + Compound. During cultivataion of lettuce and carrot, we collected more than 3,000 weed specimens, representing 25 species distributed in 11 families, 88% dicotyledonous and 22% monocotyledonous. The weed families with the highest value of importance in all stages of collection were Asteraceae, Brassicaceae and Poaceae. The most representative species in the area were Eleusine indica, Cyperus rotundus L., Galinsoga parviflora, Richardia brasiliensis, Oxalis latifolia, Cynodon dactylon and Conyza canadensis. The different forms of fertilization and use of cover crops were able to promote changes in the weed community and decrease in the population density during the experimental period. The treatments contributed to reduce the daily amplitudes of thermal and water changes and the incidence of sunlight on the surface layer of the soil, delaying the emergence of these weeds and contributing to other soil benefits inherent to the use of each type of fertilization.
