ABSTRACT. The water level in the lower Paraíba do Sul river estuary was assessed in order to evaluate the effects of the astronomical tide co-oscillation, river discharge and meteorological events. Water level data was recorded hourly from October 2000 until February 2003 at a gauge station nearby the estuarine inlet. The water level is controlled mainly by the astronomical tide co-oscillation during periods of low river discharge, and eventually by meteorological tides. Even during periods of higher river discharge the water level is controlled by astronomical co-oscillation, although during low tide phase the river discharge effects are observable. During periods of extreme high discharge the low frequency water level is mainly driven by the river inflow. The tidal wave was mostly symmetrical during the low river discharge periods, and asymmetries were observed during meteorological events, with shorter flood and longer ebbs. Although, such effects were not corroborated by astronomical tidal constituents M 2 and M 4 relationship, which suggests ebb dominance. Stronger distortions were observed during high discharge periods, with tide attenuation either at neap as in spring tide periods. During these periods the asymmetries were corroborated by M 2 and M 4 relationship. Keywords: tidal asymmetry, meteorological tides, river discharge.
The region of fluvial influence (ROFI) of Itajaí-Açu River was assessed through fourteen surveys covering thirty sampling stations in a radial shape with origin in the estuarine inlet. The total sampled area was of 100 km 2 , with depth ranging from 6 to 25 m, and until 10 Km offshore. The surveys were nearly monthly, from October 2002 to December 2003. The variables collected were salinity, temperature, suspended particulate matter, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, picoplankton (autothrophic and heterothrophic) and zooplankton. River discharge and meteorological data were also obtained to help in the general characterization. The results indicated that in terms of averaged values of each variable, the sampling area is poorly related with the river discharge, or in other words, the sampling area is wider than the ROFI. Only salinity showed reasonably agreement with river discharge, although during the winter the region is affected by the Plata estuarine front. Further analysis on the data gathered must cope with spatial variability, either horizontal, e.g., plume dispersion, as vertical, e.g., plume buoyancy flow.
The Capibaribe Estuary is a water body that crosses the Recife Metropolitan Area (RMA), one of the largest population centers in Brazil, and causes large pollutant loads and poor water quality. The fresh water inflow of wastewater from the RMA can account for three times the volume of the river discharge during the low discharge period. This article assesses the hydrodynamics and potential transport of particulate and dissolved scalars in this estuary. A field experiment was conducted to record the water level, current velocity, salinity, temperature and suspended particulate matter (SPM) contents during a full semi-diurnal tidal cycle. This experiment was performed during low river discharge and spring tide conditions. The estuary showed a partially mixed circulation pattern. The residual transport of water and salt were up estuary, while the SPM residual transport was down estuary. The former were understood as the effect of the residual circulation around the islands, while the latter was interpreted as a morphological factor inducing greater resuspension during the ebb, despite the symmetrical ebb and flood currents. This mechanism may transport SPM to the inner shelf, even under tide-dominated conditions when the opposite would be expected.
ASTRONOMICAL TIDES IN BABITONGA BAY, SC. ABSTRACTTidal harmonic constituents for Praia da Enseada (# PE) and Port of São Francisco do Sul (# PSFS) were assessed to characterize the local astronomical tide, as well to evaluate the shallow water effects on the tidal propagation to the interior of the Babitonga Bay. The sea level at # PE were monitored with a pressure tide gauge during June to December, 1996. From this data set, 48 tidal harmonic constituents was determined using the harmonic method for tidal analysis. The 32 harmonic constituents for the # PSFS were obtained with the Diretoria de Hidrografia e Navegação. Considering these information, the tide at the Babitonga Bay is classified as mixed, with semidiurnal dominance and diurnal inequalities, with Form Number of 0.32 for # PE and 0,29 for # PSFS. Nonlinear effects results in the amplification of the astronomical constituents towards the interior of the bay, showing hypersynchronous behavior. Some harmonic constituents increased about 2 to 7 times, and all prese...
The present study presents the seasonal hydrography and currents of the Brazilian Northeast Continental Shelf. The study area is located on the Brazilian tropical coast of the Atlantic Ocean between 7.5 and 9 °S. This continental shelf is narrow (~35 km wide) and shallow, with shelf break lying at a depth of 60 m. Salinity and temperature data were collected monthly by means of hydrographic surveys, conducted across the shelf in a single transect in the central part of the study area, between March 2012 and May 2013. Two further campaigns were also conducted to characterize the winter (August 2013) and the summer (January 2014), covering the whole study area (4,600 km 2 ). Water level and currents were measured using an array of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) moored at mid-shelf in the central area. Seasonal temperature ranged from 26 °C in September to 29.5 °C in April, with a 2-month lag between the minimum and maximum air temperatures. Salinity did not present a clear seasonal pattern, fluctuating between 36.5 and 37.0 psu throughout the year. The mean temperature and salinity values obtained in the winter and summer campaigns were 26.5 and 27.6 °C and 37.1 and 36.7 psu, respectively. Tropical Water (TW) was predominant, accounting for 95% to 97%, with presence of Coastal Water (CW) limited to the inner part of the shelf. The mean flow velocity values in the water column in winter and summer were 0.11 and 0.06 m/s, respectively, similarly to the seasonal wind regime. Northward currents were observed predominantly in winter, with a short period of inverted southward current. These episodes were related to periods of wind relaxation and presented periodicity of 6-13 days, observed through wavelet analysis. This periodicity may be associated with atmospheric instabilities at higher latitudes. Summer currents were sluggish, when the tides accounted for 75 and 43% of the variance in the cross-and along-shelf current components, respectively. TW is the main water mass in the Pernambuco Continental Shelf (PCS) in summer and winter. Current intensity is weak and without direction in summer and stronger towards the north in winter. Keywords: Water masses; Circulation; Brazilian Northeast Shelf. The spatial and temporal coherence of wind characteristics of coastal areas of Navegantes and Praia Grande, SC, 100 km apart each other, were assessed. Despite the relatively short distance, the oceanographic and geomorphological characteristics are different and can change the local and synoptic wind behavior, which are important for the understanding of the factors controlling the hydrodynamics and water quality of coastal environments. The comparison was performed through statistical analysis in the time and frequency domain, over a data set comprising hourly records from July to December, 1996. Both stations presented similarities regarding the north-south wind component. Therefore, quite different behavior is noticed for the east-west wind component, such as the breeze effect. The north-south wind pattern in Praia Grande is similar to the general wind regime for the Brazilian south-southwest areas, with dominance of northerly winds, and with southerly winds during the passage of cold-front systems, with small account of land-sea breeze. On the other hand, the breeze is the main factor contributing for the wind kinetics for the Navegantes area. We suggest that this differentiation is partially due to the combination of the mountain-valley circulation system of Vale do Itajaí with the breeze system, indicating a strong role of the local geomorphology on the wind regime. Additionally, it is may be possible that the sea surface temperature can also contribute, since there is a general trend of smaller temperatures southwards, though increasing the thermal gradient between the land and the sea.
