Show more

“…Balneário Barra do Sul and Penha are located on the north central coast of the state of Santa Catarina, a region characterized by a mesothermal humid cli- mate, and rainfall and average annual temperature of 1,690 mm and 20.2ºC, respectively (ARAÚJO et al 2006b). Close to the coastal region, predominate the Coastal Water mass which has salinity below 34 and temperature ranging from 19 to 28ºC in winter and summer, respectively (SCHETTINI et al 1999). For the majority of the year, winds are predominantly from the northeast, changing periodically to southerly winds with advances of the polar frontal systems, which are more frequent and intense in winter (SCHETTINI et al 1999, ARAÚJO et al 2006b).…”

The fishing grounds are composed predominantly of sandy facies varying from very fine to medium sand (CORRÊA et al 1996, ABREU et al 2006, but considerably wide layers of fine sediments (silt and clay) also occur parallel to the coast (HORN FILHO 2003).…”

“…These beaches are exposed, semi-exposed and sheltered to swells from the east and southeast and display medium-coarse grain sizes, high slopes, embayment between headlands, absence of redox layers and high hydraulic flux in the swash zone. The local tidal regime consists of microtides of discontinuous semidiurnal periods with mean amplitude of 0.8 m (Schettini et al 1999;Carvalho et al 1996), occasionally influenced by storms, which can raise the sea level ca. 1 m above astronomical tides (Carvalho et al 1996;Schettini et al 1999).…”

Most beaches are exposed and dominated by waves due to NS orientation of the coastline and NE-SW waves system or winds prevailing in the region (Klein and Menezes 2001;Barros et al 2001).…”

“…According to Schettini et al (1999), the waters of the Armação do Itapocoroy Bay are typically comprised of coastal waters (salinity lower than 34), with a seasonal temperature ranging from 19 • C to 28 • C. Both the salinity and the load of material in suspension are directly influenced by the Itajaí-açu River (Carvalho et al 1998, Resgalla Jr and, which has a plume of brackish water flowing northwards from the river mouth.…”
