ABSTRACT: "Antimicrobial activity of essential oils produced by Baccharis dracunculifolia D.C. and Baccharis uncinella D.C. (Asteraceae)". Essential oils obtained from the native plantsBaccharis dracunculifolia and Baccharis uncinella, known also as "óleo de vassoura", are used in the perfumery industry, providing diverse perfumes with exotic aromas. Besides several studies about the biological activities of these species highlight the allelopathic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, cytotoxic and antiinfl ammatory effects. The broom is a bushy plant which occurs spontaneously in Brazil as well as in the other countries from Mercosul. The oil composition depends on the geographical region and on the concentration of oxygenated blends, highlighting the nerolidol and the sphatulenol. Essential oils obtained from these two species by the hydrodistillation process were assessed by the diffusion method in paper disc, in Petri plaques containing Müeller-Hinton agar, with bacteria suspensions, previously adjusted to the tube 0,5 of Mac Farland scale of four strains which came from the American Type Culture Collection: Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. Discs containing different volumes of the essential oils (1, 3, 5 and 10 (μL/disc) were added to plaques and incubated at 36 ºC for 24...
The use of cover crops can contribute to the reduction of the dose required for weed control. The aim of this work was to assess the growth of weeds and productivity of corn from different degrees of black oat cover and velvet bean and atrazine doses. Two experiments were conducted in the experimental area, both was conducted in randomized blocks in a split plot design with four replications. In the main plots were randomized, four straw levels (0, 0.75, 1.5 and 3 times the amount originally produced) oat (Exp 1) or velvet bean (Exp 2). In the subplots were randomized to four doses of atrazine (0, 2100, 4200 and 8400 g ha -1 ). It was evaluated the weed density and crop yield. The utilization of straw species coverage on the ground, even at high levels, was not enough to exercise total control of weeds. Atrazine was not effective in weed control only in the treatment with 2100 g ha -1 of the herbicide and no velvet bean straw on the ground, but the straw of this species realized suppressive effect, supplementing the effect of the herbicidal dose. Levels in 2775 and 5550 kg ha -1 of velvet bean straw reduce the productivity of corn. Integrating the use of oat or velvet bean straw with low dose of atrazine (2100 g ai ha -1 ), results in effective weed control systems and more suitable cropping systems in the environmental aspect, both by reducing the use of herbicides as taking advantage of the benefits of no-till system.

-Mobility of atrazine in soil has contributed to the detection of levels above the legal limit in surface water and groundwater in Europe and the United States. The use of new formulations can reduce or minimize the impacts caused by the intensive use of this herbicide in Brazil, mainly in regions with higher agricultural intensification. The objective of this study was to compare the leaching of a commercial formulation of atrazine (WG) with a controlled release formulation (xerogel) using bioassay and chromatographic methods of analysis. The experiment was a split plot randomized block design with four replications, in a (2 x 6) + 1 arrangement. The main formulations of atrazine (WG and xerogel) were allocated in the plots, and the herbicide concentrations (0, 3200, 3600, 4200, 5400 and 8000 g ha -1 ), in the subplots. Leaching was determined comparatively by using bioassays with oat and chromatographic analysis. The results showed a greater concentration of the herbicide in the topsoil (0-4 cm) in the treatment with the xerogel formulation in comparison with the commercial formulation, which contradicts the results obtained with bioassays, probably because the amount of herbicide available for uptake by plants in the xerogel formulation is less than that available in the WG formulation. Keywords: percolation, residual herbicides, persistence, chromatography, xerogel. RESUMO -
The intensive use of pesticides have contaminated the soil and groundwater. The application of herbicides as controlled release formulations may reduce the environmental damage related to their use because it may optimize the efficiency of the active ingredient and reducing thus the recommended dose. The objective of this study was to evaluate the persistence of the herbicide atrazine applied as commercial formulation (COM) and as controlled release formulation (xerogel - XER) in Oxisol. The experimental design used was split-plot randomized-blocks with four replications, in a (2 x 6) + 1 arrangement. The two formulations (COM and XER) were assigned to main plots and different atrazine concentrations (0, 3.200, 3.600, 4.200, 5.400 and 8.000 g atrazine ha-1) were assigned to sub-plots. Persistence was determined by means of dissipation kinetics and bioavailability tests. The methodology of bioassays to assess the atrazine availability is efficient and enables to distinguish the tested formulations. The availability of atrazine XER is higher than the commercial in two different periods: up to 5 days after herbicide application and at the 35th day after application. The XER formulation tends to be more persistent in relation to COM formulation.
