ABSTRACTPiptocarpha angustifolia Dusén (Asteraceae) is a brazilian native woody species belonging to Mixed Rain Forest (Araucaria´s Forest) with potential use for enviromental restoration and economical in plantation for woody production. Its propagation by seeds presents difficulties by irregular production and collection and low germination by poor number of feasible seeds. This work aims to verify the rooting response for semihardwood cuttings of annual shoots from mature plants, collected in spring 2004, summer, autumn and winter 2005 in Colombo, Paraná state, Brazil and submitted a different treatments by alcoholic solution with use of plant growth regulator indolebutyric acid (IBA). Anatomical and biochemical analysis of total carbohydrates and proteins were made to investigate possible obstacle to roots initiation. The statistical analyses were made by completly randomized design with four treatments of twenty cuttings, evaluating rooting percentage, callus cuttings, alive and dead cuttings. No adventitous rooting response was verified in all seasons studied. The presence of fibers was not related as anatomical barrier to rooting. The microchemical tests weren't conclusive to presence phenolic compounds and total carbohydrates and proteins weren´t correlated to rooting.
ABSTRACTThe genus Mentha includes many species of economic interest due the essential oil production. Recently new genetic materials were introduced in Brazil to evaluate the adaptation related to essential oil yield and composition. In the present work, these characteristics were compared in six cultivars of the species Mentha x piperita L.
Although small fruits, with some exceptions, are not yet as popular in Brazil, some farmers have invested in this market and the genus Physalis can be an important alternative source of income due to its high added value and possibility of cultivation in small areas. To date, there are no specific fertilizer recommendations for even the most cultivated species (Physalis peruviana) and therefore the goal of this study was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen fertilization on quality of fruits of Physalis peruviana and Physalis pubescens. Plants were grown in 5 L pots containing soil and maintained in a controlled environment, in greenhouse. Treatments consisted of five N levels (kg ha
-(Detection of anthraquinones and identification of 1,4-naphthohydroquinone in cell suspension cultures of Rudgea jasminoides (Cham.) Müll. Arg. (Rubiaceae)). In Rubiaceae, anthraquinones and naphthoquinones are secondary metabolites characteristic of the subfamily Rubioideae, in which Rudgea jasminoides is included. Thin-layer chromatography using specific solvent systems and spray reagents indicated the presence of anthraquinones constitutively produced by cell suspension cultures of R. jasminoides. GC/MS analysis detected 1,4-naphthohydroquinone as a product of biosynthesis only after elicitation of the cells with yeast extract (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The latter compound is probably a phytoalexin produced by suspension cultures of R. jasminoides.
-(Constitutive and induced antifungal compounds in leaves and cell suspension cultures of Rudgea jasminoides (Cham.) Müll. Arg. (Rubiaceae)). Rudgea jasminoides (Cham.) Müll. Arg. is a woody Rubiaceae species from tropical forest that synthesized antifungal secondary metabolites when challenged by fungi. Members of the Rubiaceae are among the few plants that are easily taken into cell cultures to produce substantial amounts of secondary products that surpass those of the whole plant. In this work we analyzed the presence of constitutive and induced antifungal compounds produced by leaves and cell suspension cultures of this species. Oligogalacturonides (OGAs), salicylic acid (AS), nitric oxide (NO), and yeast β-glucan fragments were used as elicitors. Constitutive compounds with antifungal activity were detected in cell suspension cultures of R. jasminoides, mainly during the stationary growth phase. They were found in higher diversity and amounts than those present in leaves. Treatment with β-glucan fragments increased the production of constitutive compounds and induced the synthesis of antifungal metabolites absent in non-elicited cultures (phytoalexins), mainly during the exponential growth phase. OGAs derived from R. jasminoides leaf cell walls showed similar effect. Under our experimental conditions, the endogenous signaling molecules salicylic acid and nitric oxide were toxic to the cells and did not act as elicitors of antifungal compounds in suspension cultures of R. jasminoides. Our data indicate that cell suspension cultures of R. jasminoides are able to synthesize antifungal compounds and their production can be enhanced by fungal or plant elicitors.
