Abstract. This longitudinal study aims to seek for solutions concerning the teaching and learning English at the Faculty of Medicine University of Mataram (UNRAM). The first year of the study is emphasized on the outcomes of needs analysis, which encompasses the Present Situation Analysis (PSA), the Target Situation Analysis (TSA), and the Learning Situation Analysis (LSA). Various data were collected form the documents of Standar Kompetensi Dokter Indonesia (SKDI) a.k.a. Competency Standards of Medical Doctors in Indonesia, the Graduates Profile of Faculty of Medicine UNRAM and the documents of student English proficiency levels within the last 5 years. Other sources of data were taken from a number of focused group discussions and in-depth interviews with students, alumni, subject specialists, management of Block, and various techniques. The data were then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. Findings of the study show that the level of English of students at Medical Faculty was still far from being adequate to meet the SKDI. As such, three learning goals were generated from this study, i.e. the short-tem, mid-term, and long-term goals. The study suggests that to bridge the gap, the Faculty of Medicine needs to develop a number of language programs to prepare these students to achieve competencies that meet the standard of Graduate Profile and SKDI.
This study aims to reveal how high school teachers adjust to the demand of utilizing digital literacy skills in two selected areas of the Lombok Island, Indonesia. The study sought to get deep understanding of how high school teachers developed their digital literacy competences and kept up with the demand of online teaching of English during the pandemic time. The study also sought to identify problems pertaining to the utilization of digital literacy in the pandemic time. The study employed a qualitative method with multiple-case design. A purposive Sampling technique was used to determine the key informants for the study. The data were obtained from various sources, which included interviews, observations and document studies. The process of data analysis encompassed data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. This was done through triangulation of data iteratively. The data were then analyzed thematically. The study yields that teachers in the two selected research areas acquired varying degrees of digital literacy competences due to different goal-setting, interests, knowledge and skills. A number of problems pertaining to teachers’ differing competences in digital literacy were identified, i.e. (1) lack of internet access (2) the absence of professional development, (3) and institutional support system. All of these problems were intertwined in nature. The study concludes that a professional development program needs to be devised for the participants to improve their performance and competence in utilizing digital literacy.
Salah satu nilai sosio-kultural masyarakat yang dapat diangkat sebagai suatu nilai pendidikan karakter adalah sastra lisan yang tersebar di berbagai daerah di Indonesia. Sastra lisan adalah teks lisan yang tergolong sebagai bagian dari folklor yang perlu dikaji dan dipelajari secara mendalam dalam rangka pengembangan pendidikan karakter. Secara khusus hasil kajian terhadap sastra lisan ini dapat dijadikan sumber dan dasar untuk memperbaiki kualitas sumberdaya manusia menjadi sumberdaya manusia Indonesia yang memiliki nilai-nilai heroisme, kejujuran, pintar, beretos kerja tinggi, kreatif, dan religius. Persoalan nilai kultural dan pendidikan karakter yang dipresentasikan didalam paper ini adalah nilai kultural masyarakat yang tertuang pada sastra lisan masyarakat Sasak di Lombok. Teori yang dipergunakan dalam mengkaji nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter tersebut adalah teori filologi dan teori nilai. Selanjutnya, metode yang dipergunakan dalam menganalisis data penelitian untuk paper ini mencakup metode penggalian data (data discovery methods) dan metode analisis wacana kritis. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa karya sastra lisan yang menjadi obyek penelitian, Tembang Rengganis, mengandung lima belas dari delapan belas nilai pendidikan karakter yang diamanatkan oleh pemerintah Indonesia untuk diajarkan dan diterapkan dalam kehidupan masyarakat Indonesia. Nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter tersebut adalah nilai religius, jujur, toleran, disiplin, kerja keras, kreatif, independen, nasionalisme, cinta tanah air, ramah/komunikatif, cinta damai, cinta lingkungan, kepedulian sosial, dan bertanggung jawab. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa nilai-nilai pendidikan karakter seperti ini telah dikembangkan dan, bahkan, telah diaplikasikan oleh masyarakat Sasak jauh sebelum pendidikan karakter diintroduksi dalam konteks pendidikan di Indonesia.
As an international lingua franca, English plays an important role for students of health for both academic and career success; however, it is often neglected in its planning and implementation. The present study aims at redesigning the teaching of English for midwifery students using an ESP approach by analyzing present situations (PSA), target situations (TSA), and learning situations (LSA) as the basis for designing English programs. The research was conducted at Midwifery Department, Polytechnic of Health (Politeknik Kesehatan henceforth POLTEKES) Mataram, Indonesia involving students, English lecturers, subject specialists, and management. Data were collected using triangulation techniques -- ECSCS Test, questionnaires, interviews, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), and documentation – and were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively based on the characteristics of data. The research found that (i) the students’ level of English was still low (84.6% in Basic); (ii) the target needs (necessities) are to be able to communicate both spoken and written in carrying out the duties in workplaces and professional development; (iii) from those results mentioned above, there were conflicts among aspects of needs in designing courses, that is, the high target does not correspond to entry behavior, the number of credits allocated, and facilities. Considering the results of NA, it is suggested that the English programs can be designed using Necessities (TSA)-based Approach, PSA-based Approach, or Mixed Approach with its own advantages and disadvantages
This is a systemic functional study of the use of the items of pragmatic markers in a literary discourse. The aims of this study are to identify, analyze and describe the ways the items of pragmatic markers are used. Their contextual meanings, functions, and implication to the pedagogical attempts are also unfolded. The results of the interpretative and descriptive analysis reveal that the items of the core modals serving as pragmatic markers are found to be very dominant which also suggests that the genre of narrative fiction is linguistically characterized by the utterances that are established on the basis of knowledge and reasoning. The items of pragmatic markers are found to be polysemous and polyfunctional which are reflected pragmatically in the forms of politeness, negotiative and constructive functions. All these lead to the acknowledgement that the use of the items of pragmatic markers in literary discourse is important and their usage for language teaching in the applied linguistic contexts is worth conducting.
