-The objective of this work was to estimate the global radiation by simplified models for the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The parameterized coefficients of 15 simplified models were regionally calibrated to estimate the daily global radiation, based only on air temperature, using data from 28 automatic weather stations (AWS) of the network of the Brazilian Meteorology Institute, distributed throughout the different biomes of the state of Mato Grosso. The simplified models are mostly derived from the Hargreaves and Bristow & Campbell methods, with different parameterized coefficients to be calibrated. The coefficient of determination (R 2 ), the mean bias error (MBE), the root mean square error (RMSE), and Willmott's d index were used to evaluate statistical performance. For the recommendation of models per station and/or biome, the models were rated numerically Index terms: air temperature, Amazon, Cerrado, parameterized coefficients, solar radiation. D. daPERFORMANCE OF A LUMPED AND A SEMI-DISTRIBUTED HYDROLOGIC MODEL IN PREDICTING DAILY FLOW RATES 2 ABSTRACT Hydrological models are important tools which have been used in the planning and management of water resources, reason why the aim of the study was to calibrate, validate and analyze IPH II and SWAT models’ performances to simulate theaverage daily flow rates of a sub-basin of Pomba river, located in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Rainfall data and reference evapotranspiration were used for the simulation with the IPH II model. On the other hand, for the simulation with SWAT, spatial data were used (soil maps, land use and topography) and discrete data (rainfall, maximum and minimum temperature, radiation, relative humidity, wind speed, vegetation, groundwater and physical-hydric characteristics of soils). Calibration was performed by the automatic method based on Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient. Validation and verification of the models’ performance were based on the mean absolute error, root mean squared error, in bias, pared t-test at 5% probability, Willmott concordance and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency index. The IPH II and SWAT models showed good and satisfactory results in estimating average daily flow rates based on the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient, respectively, however, the SWAT showed values statistically different from those observed in the validation period at 5% probability by pared t-test, which shows that the IPH II model is more reliable and suitable for use in studies related to hydrologic simulation and management of water resources in the watershed. C.USING THE STANDARDIZED PRECIPITATION INDEX FOR THE NORTHERN ESPÍRITO SANTO STATE 2 ABSTRACT Drought is a complex meteorological phenomenon with local and regional influence. Studying it is of utmost importance for planning and management of water resources. Meteorologists and hydrologists proposed indices to characterize, detect and monitor meteorological droughts. Among these indices, the standardized precipitation index (SPI) stands out. The objective of this study was to use and evaluate the SPI to characterize deficit and excess of precipitation in monthly and quarterly scales for the northern Espírito Santo state. The SPI was calculated using the incomplete gamma distribution. Limits of precipitation corresponding to each category of the index were estimated. Spatial distribution of the index was studied from October 2009 to March 2010. The SPI proved to be an effective and practical method for characterization and monitoring of drought and humidity in the northern region of the state. Based on the study of its spatial distribution, identification of critical sites concerning droughts were identified, which enables targeting mitigation actions and water resource management. Keywords: drought, humidity, drought index, SPI, precipitation.
ABSTRACT:This study aimed at testing the fit of continuous probability distributions to a daily reference evapotranspiration dataset (ET0) at a 75% probability level for designing of irrigation systems. Reference evapotranspiration was estimated by the Penman-Monteith method (FAO-56-PM) for eight locations, within the state of Espírito Santo (Brazil), where there are automatic gauge stations. The assessed probability distributions were beta, gamma, generalized extreme value (GEV), generalized logistic (GLO), generalized normal (GN), Gumbel (G), normal (N), Pearson type 3 (P3), Weibull (W), two-and three-parameter lognormal (LN2 and LN3). The fitting of the probability distributions to the ET0 daily dataset was checked by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov's test. Among the studied distributions, GN was the only one to fit the ET0 data for all studied months and locations. We should also infer that continuous probability models have a good fit to the studied ET0 dataset, enabling its estimation at 75% probability through a Generalized Normal distribution (GN). Therefore, it can be used for the sizing of irrigation systems according to a given degree of risk.
Intensive rainfall is an important meteorological variable that is of technical interest in hydraulic projects. This study therefore generated Intensity-Duration-Frequency equations (IDF) for 14 weather stations in Mato Grosso State, based on pluviograph analysis. Annual maximum rainfall data regarding 10-to-1440-minute long rainfall events were collected from digitized daily pluviographs. Data adherence to the generalized extreme value distribution (GEV) was checked through the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test at a 20% significance level. Next, the maximum probable rainfall for return periods such as 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100 years was calculated and the IDF equations were adjusted. The performance of the IDF equations was evaluated based on mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), bias, Willmott's concordance index and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency index (ENS). Adjusting the IDF equations was only possible for rainfall durations ranging from 10 to 360 min at each station due to the low frequency of longer rainfalls. High variation was present in parameters of the IDF equation and in maximum rainfall intensity between stations. The satisfactory performance of the models, as attested to by statistical indices, allows using IDF equations adjusted for rainfall durations from 10 to 360 min, and return periods from 2 to 100 years, in the regions of the Mato Grosso weather stations.
