The aim of this study was to synthesize and analyze scientific evidence of the perceived barriers to leisure-time physical activity (PA) in the Brazilian population. The Lilacs, SciELO, PubMed, ScienceDirect and Web of Science journal databases were reviewed and the number of reports of each barrier to PA, grouped according to the level of determinants of the social ecological model (intrapersonal, interpersonal and environmental) was analyzed. We found 25 studies (11 in adolescents, 8 in adults and 6 in older adults), totaling 62,678 reports of barriers to PA. The studies were conducted in the South (n=15), Southeast (n=7), and Northeast (n=2) regions, and one study also included different regions of Brazil. Overall, about seven out of every 10 reports on barriers to PA involved intrapersonal barriers. Adults and older adults had a higher proportion of reports of intrapersonal barriers (84.8% and 74%, respectively), than adolescents (47.8%). There are still few studies with older adults, children, and in populations of the Midwest and North of the country. The most frequently reported barriers to PA among adolescents were lack of company, lack of social support from family and friends, unsuitable climate and limited access to spaces for PA. Lack of motivation and lack of time were the most frequently reported barriers in adults, whereas in older adults the predominant barriers were lack of motivation and diagnosed disease or physical limitation. PA promotion programs need to take into account the different barriers to PA, since these are specific to age groups. Level of Evidence II; Systematic Review of Level II Studies.
To analyze the moderating effect of maturation on the association between social support, received from parents and friends, on physical activity level in adolescents. Cross-sectional study conducted in 2014 with a representative sample of 855 adolescents (54% girls) enrolled in public school of São José dos Pinhais, Brazil. Adolescents reported weekly attendance who received different types of social support for physical activity, which was classified into three categories (“never," "sometimes," "always"). The social support score from each source was computed and classified in tertiles ("low", "intermediate", "high"). The moderate to vigorous leisure time physical activity was evaluated with a valid questionnaire and the score was classified as ≥300 min/wk. The maturation was self-assessed by pubic hairiness by photos and classified as "pubescent" and "post-pubescent". The associations were tested with Poisson regression in STATA 14. The fact that parents "sometimes" (PR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.42-4.44) or "always" (PR: 4.60; 95% CI: 2.10-10.10) to attend the activities was positively associated with the physical activity of pubertal adolescents. While positive reinforcement for the activities ("always" commenting) was positively associated with the outcome in post-pubertal adolescents (PR: 2.60; 95% CI: 1.01-6.71). The fact that friends "always" watch activities (PR: 2.39; 95% CI: 1.01-5.76), the score "intermediate" (PR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.28-3.58) and "high" (RP: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.11-3.28) were positively associated with the physical activity of pubertal adolescents. Maturation shows a moderating effect in the association between the social support and physical activity.
The aim of this study was to identify the barriers to physical activity in overweight adults. We used the technique of focus groups in adults between 20 and 55 years old (n=36; 52.7% women) in four homogeneous groups according to gender and stage of change behavior for physical activity. The most common barriers among adults with overweight were those that constituted the intrapersonal category (51.3%), such as feelings of negative body image, lack of confidence in performing physical activity, lack of time, lack of financial resources, and having a disease. The environment category represented 32.1% of the reported barriers (bad weather, lack of security and lack of places and lack of structures for physical activity) whereas interpersonal category showed 16.6% of the barriers (lack of support from friends, family and professionals). In conclusion, the intrapersonal barriers were the most frequently reported and there were no differences of barriers in relation to the stage of behavior change.
Objective: To synthesize the evidence available in the literature on the relationship between the components of physical activity, physical fitness and academic achievement in adolescents. Methods: The review followed the methodological procedures described by PRISMA and was carried out in the Lilacs, Medline, SciELO, PubMed, Web of Science and Science Direct databases. Quantitative empirical studies published as of 2006 were included. The following descriptors and keywords were used: “Motor activity”, “Physical fitness”, “Physical activity”, “Educational status”, “Academic achievement”, “Academic performance”, and their equivalents in Portuguese and Spanish. Results: The most widely investigated variable was physical fitness (45.5%) followed by physical activity (40.9%), whereas only three studies (13.6%) investigated both. Conclusion: Physical activity and physical fitness are positively associated with the academic achievement of adolescents. In more than 80% of studies the association was considered strong. The physical fitness component most frequently associated with academic achievement was cardiorespiratory fitness. Level of evidence II; Systematic review.
