Mild thyroid abnormalities are associated with an increased rate of miscarriage. This poor obstetrical prognosis seems to be related to an impaired thyroid adaptation to pregnancy. Thyroid replacement therapy appears to be more effective than IVIG in preventing a new miscarriage.
In patients with aPL syndrome, IVIG treatment improved pregnancy outcome, with significantly lower pregnancy complication rates, when compared with prednisone plus LDA therapy.
A transient impairment of thyroid function in early pregnancy may cause an inadequate adaptation to the increased thyroid requirement and may be implicated in RM. The evaluation of the proposed iTSHa index, if validated in a larger cohort of patients, may provide information useful to identifying a subset of healthy women, without evidence of thyroid dysfunction or autoimmunity and a TSH in the low-normal reference range, who may be at risk of RM.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
