AbstractPurpose -The paper aims to investigate the effect of compositions of managerial/demographic characteristics of the top management team (TMT) on the extent of information technology (IT) adoption in small businesses (SMEs), where such strategic decisions made by TMT have direct and significant influence on all aspects of business operations and its competitive position in a market. Design/methodology/approach -Based on the upper echelon theory, the study formulated four hypotheses relating the compositions of TMT characteristics to the extent of IT adoption in different functional areas. Multiple regression analysis was employed to analyze the data. Findings -The age average and the education average of TMT in small businesses are significant predictors of the extent of IT adoption. However, the group heterogeneity (either gender or ethnicity), contrary to the prediction, has negative impact on the extent of IT adoption. Practical implications -The research findings indicate that the age and education composition of managers as current/future top management is critical to facilitate the extent of IT adoption in SMEs. Originality/value -The research contributes to the body of knowledge in IT adoption by complementing the results of prior research with the findings that the characteristic compositions of TMT affect the extent of IT adoption in SMEs, applying the upper echelon theory to examine issues surrounding IT adoption, and suggesting practical implications that SMEs could compose, educate, and rejuvenate their top management teams to achieve a high extent of IT adoption.
Abstract-Assessment of student learning is an important task in a teaching and learning process. It has a strong influence on students' approaches to learning and their outcomes. Recent development in tertiary education has shifted its emphasis from teacher-centered learning to student-centered learning. In a student-centered learning environment, criterion-referenced assessment techniques are often used in current education research and practice. However, it sometimes happens that the assessment criteria and their corresponding weights are solely determined by the lecturers in charge. This may reduce the interest of students' participation and lower the quality of their learning. This paper presents an integrated fuzzy set approach to assess the outcomes of student-centered learning. It uses fuzzy set principles to represent the imprecise concepts for subjective judgment and applies a fuzzy set method to determine the assessment criteria and their corresponding weights. Based on the commonly agreed assessment criteria, students' learning outcomes are evaluated on a fuzzy grade scale. The proposed fuzzy set approach incorporates students' opinions into assessment and allows them to have a better understanding on the assessment criteria. It aims at encouraging students to participate in the whole learning process and providing an open and fair environment for assessment.Index Terms-Fuzzy set application, group decision support systems, project assessment, student-centered learning.
BackgroundThe signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling pathways play important roles in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). However, the mechanism of crosstalk between two pathways is not completely understood.MethodsThe expression of STAT1 protein was detected by tissue microarray and immunoblotting (IB). The interaction of STAT1 isoforms with TGF-β receptors was confirmed by immunoprecipitation and IB. The effect of TGF-β signaling on STAT1 activation was examined in EOC and non-tumorous HOSEpiC cells treated with TGF-β1 in the presence or absence of the inhibitor of TGF-β type I receptor. The gain-of-function and loss-of-function approaches were applied for detecting the role of STAT1 on EOC cell behaviours.ResultsThe high level of STAT1 was observed in patients with high-grade serous EOC. STAT1 expression was higher in ovarian cancer cells than noncancerous cells. TGF-β1 activated the STAT1 pathway by inducing the phosphorylation of STAT1α on S727 residue. The full-length STAT1α and the truncated STAT1β directly interacted with TGF-β receptors (ALK1/ALK5 and TβRII), which was mediated by TGF-β1. STAT1α and STAT1β blocked the activation of the TGF-β1 signaling pathway in EOC cells by reducing Smad2 phosphorylation. STAT1 overexpression induced EOC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion; whereas its inhibition enhanced TGF-β1-induced phospho-Smad2 and suppressed EOC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion.ConclusionsOur data unveil a novel insight into the molecular mechanism of crosstalk between the STAT1 and TGF-β signaling pathways, which affected the cancer cell behavior. Suppression of STAT1 may be a potential therapeutic strategy for targeting ovarian cancer.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1186/s13046-018-0773-8) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
The latest emergence of a novel coronavirus (COVID-19) had caused an outbreak of respiratory virus infections in Wuhan, China, and other countries so that the world health organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 epidemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on January 31, 2020. At present, it is the fact that we have identified the bats as the host, the route of respiratory droplets, contact, and aerosol can accelerate the transmission from person to person. However, it is not well known about the intermediator and other approaches. Identifying and characterizing the origin and host(s) of COVID-19 can help us to evaluate the potential risk of COVID-19 for transmission among humans or cross-species.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
