Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the required physical and social attributes of open spaces and demonstrate the effects of these attributes on place dependency, which is the functional dimension of place attachment. In this context, the paper only focused on the effects of the physical and social attributes of the environment on the place attachment. Design/methodology/approach The general framework of the study design included the determination of the place attachment value for the space through identification of its physical and social attributes by the users. The research method included the evaluation of the physical and social attributes and the place attachment. Findings The study model demonstrated that the place attachment increased in successful urban spaces where user needs are met at a higher level. It was demonstrated that the social attributes, in particular the social environment, had a higher impact on the functional attachment of the users when compared to the physical attributes. Research limitations/implications The present study investigated the factors that affected place attachment in urban open spaces within the context of human–environment interaction and specifically in the context of Trabzon square parks. Practical implications The study findings are considered important for both urban planners and administrators, who are responsible for protection and development of urban spaces, and the users. Originality/value The present study attempted to investigate the effects of physical and social attributes of the place on place dependence.
Campuses, which are a whole with education, teaching, cultural structures and open spaces, are spatial organizations where students, academicians and staff come together. In this respect, in the design of university campuses, it is necessary to focus not only on physical and aesthetic features, but also on spatial organizations that can create the meaning and social interaction of the place. The purpose of this research is to determine the performance levels of existing campus open spaces and to investigate their effects on place satisfaction. The present study, constructed to determine the impact of functional, social and perceptual attributes of campus open spaces on place satisfaction, was conducted at Karadeniz Technical University-Kanuni Campus. When the campus open spaces were selected in the study, open spaces that allowed socio-cultural activities in the campus were preferred, excluding the educational buildings. Within the scope of the study, in which the analysis of the space as an attitude element constitutes the general framework and originality of the study, a total of 240 people were surveyed in 3 regions selected. In conclusion, the present study discussed the environmental attributes of campus open spaces with a 3-dimensional approach and determined that not only perceptual attributes affected place satisfaction. The study findings suggested that functional and social attributes, occupancy frequency and duration variables had positive effects on place satisfaction. The study findings are considered important for both urban planners and administrators, who are responsible for protection and development of campus open spaces, and the users.
Temel Tasarım, tasarımla uğraşan bütün disiplinler için özgün, önemli ve zorunlu bir derstir. Bu ders sürecinde öğrenciler, alanlarına dair temel kavramları öğrenirken tasarım öğe ve ilkelerini uygulamalı çalışmalarla kavrarlar. Tasarım bir çeşit sorun çözme eylemi olarak ele alındığında, Temel Tasarım dersi bu eylemin en temel aracı olan yaratıcı düşünmeyi öğrencilere öğretmektedir. Gerçeği ve verilen sorunu analiz etmek, kavramsal olarak parçalarına ayırmak, fikir üretmek ve somut yaratıcı bir sonuca varabilmek Temel Tasarım dersinin içeriğini oluşturur. Tasarım eğitimcilerinin özgün yöntemler aracılığıyla bilgi üretmeleri ve bu yöntemleri tüm tasarım eğitimcileriyle paylaşmaları gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada da soyuttan yaratıcı somut ürüne varan yaratıcı bir tasarlama yönteminin ve öğrenime etkilerinin paylaşımı amaçlanmaktadır. Peyzaj Mimarlığı eğitiminde 1. Sınıfta verilen Temel Tasarım dersinin soyut kavramlardan, somut mekânsal kurguya varan süreci incelenerek, bu sürecin eğitime katkıları ortaya konmuştur. Bu bağlamda çalışmanın ilk aşamasında; Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Peyzaj mimarlığı Bölümü Temel Tasarım Dersinde öğrencilerin dönem içi ve final çalışmaları örneklendirilerek incelenmiştir. İkinci aşamada ise anket çalışması yapılarak; öğrencilerin bu dersi ne kadar öğretici ve ne kadar yaratıcı buldukları araştırılmıştır. Böylece temel tasarım dersinin süreci incelenmiş ve yaratıcılık ile öğrenmeye etkileri belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Sonuçta öğrencilerin temel tasarım sürecini öğretici ve yaratıcı bir süreç olarak değerlendirdikleri belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin; bu derste tasarımcı kimliklerini geliştirdikleri de çalışmanın sonuçlarındandır.
