-The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of addition of different levels of cottonseed (0, 14.35, 27.51 and 34.09 kg/100 kg) in the diet of Nellore steers on the meat characteristics. Thirty-six steers (average initial body weight of 333.50 and average age of 20 months) were kept in feedlot stalls for 94 days, each stall with three animals. The experiment was a completely randomized design with four treatments and nine replications. The values of protein, fixed mineral residue, shear force, lipid oxidation, meat color and fat color were similar among the treatments. The increase of the cottonseed levels in the diet reduced the amount of intramuscular fat and increased the moisture content in the meat linearly. Meat aroma and flavor were negatively influenced when cottonseed addition was greater than 27.51 and 34.09 kg/100 kg of the diet, respectively. Cottonseed diet did not modify the concentration of conjugated linoleic acid, saturated fatty acids or total unsaturated fatty acids, but linearly reduced the concentration of monounsaturated fatty acids in the meat.
The daily weight gain and economic aspects of beef cattle raised on tropical pastures receiving two types of mineral supplements were evaluated during 112-183 days during the wet season in 4 herds. On each farm the animals were divided into two groups. For one group a commercial mineral mixture was used, and to the other group a selective mineral mixture containing only Na, P, Cu and Co was offered. The cattle were weighed every 30 days, and the mineral supplement intake was measured monthly. The daily weight gain of the animals receiving the selective mineral mixture was greater in three farms. Only on the second farm the group receiving the commercial mineral mixture had a superior daily weight gain. The daily intake of the selective mineral mixture was lower in all groups and was attributed to the high amount of NaCl in these mixtures. The selective mineral supplementation was 3 up to 7 times more economic than the conventional supplementation with a "complete" mineral mix. Throughout the experimental period the animals did not show any direct or indirect clinical signs of mineral deficiency. The results of these experiments confirms the hypothesis that selective mineral supplementation -i.e. supplementation of the mineral element(s) deficient -was correct and results in expressive reduction of the cost with the mineral supplementation for beef cattle.INDEX TERMS: Beef cattle, mineral supplementation, tropical forages.

Avaliou-se o efeito da adição de caroço de algodão à dieta de bovinos confinados sobre o desempenho animal e características da carcaça. Usaram-se 36 novilhos Nelore com médias de idade e peso vivo inicial de 20 meses e 333,5kg. Os animais foram confinados e receberam dietas com os seguintes teores de caroço de algodão: 0; 14,35%; 27,51%; e 34,09% na matéria seca da dieta. O ganho de peso diário, peso vivo final e consumo de matéria seca diminuíram linearmente com o aumento da proporção de caroço de algodão na dieta. Não foi observado efeito sobre o ganho de peso total ajustado ao consumo. Os pesos da carcaça e do contrafilé diminuíram linearmente com o aumento da proporção de caroço de algodão na dieta. Não foi observado efeito do teor de caroço de algodão sobre a área de olho de lombo. A espessura de gordura de cobertura do dorso e da garupa diminuíram com o aumento do teor de caroço de algodão. Observou-se correlação de 0,62 entre as duas medidas de gordura. A adição de caroço de algodão à dieta de bovinos de corte não se mostrou vantajosa, pois diminuiu o desempenho animal e a deposição de gordura na carcaça.
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the dietary inclusion of lipid-based diets (whole cottonseed and protected fat) on the centesimal composition, fatty acid profile, and sensory properties of meat from finishing Nellore cattle. The study was carried out from August to October 2009. Thirty nine uncastrated Nellore males with average initial body weight of 494.1 ± 10.1 kg and 36 months of age were housed for 63 days in pens with thirteen animals each. A completely randomized design with three treatments and thirteen replications was used. The treatments evaluated were: feed with 2.50% cottonseed (control diet); feed with 11.50 % cottonseed; and feed with 3.13% cottonseed added of protected lipid (PL), all on a dry matter basis. No differences between treatments were observed for moisture, protein, and ash contents. However, the addition of protected fat caused an increase in the percentage of ether extract in the meat. Diets containing cottonseed or protected lipid did not affect fatty acid concentration in the meat. The intensity of the aroma, strange aroma, flavor, strange flavor, juiciness, color, and overall appearance were similar between treatments, except for tenderness, which was positively affected in cattle fed a diet in which the only lipid source was cottonseed. The study demonstrated that the addition of PL in the diets of finishing cattle led to greater levels of intramuscular fat, but to less tender meat than the other treatments.
Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da inclusão da torta de girassol na dieta de cordeiros em confinamento sobre o desempenho produtivo dos animais. Utilizaram-se 40 cordeiros sem raça definida, não castrados, com peso médio inicial de 20,17±2,66 kg, alimentados com 0, 7, 14, 21 e 28% de torta de girassol na dieta (base seca). O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos ao acaso. A inclusão de torta de girassol na dieta não alterou o consumo médio de matéria seca (883,58 g por dia), a conversão alimentar (4,40) e o consumo médio de água (2,59 L por dia). O aumento dos níveis de torta de girassol diminuiu linearmente o peso final, o ganho de peso total, o ganho de peso diário e a área de olho de lombo. O nível de inclusão de até 28% não afeta o consumo médio de matéria seca e de água, mas reduz o desempenho e a área de olho de lombo. Para obter o menor custo com a dieta, o nível de inclusão da torta de girassol pode atingir até 28% da matéria seca, quando o seu preço representar até 40% do preço da mistura entre milho e farelo de soja.Termos para indexação: avaliação econômica, confinamento, coprodutos, custo da dieta, ovinos. Performance of feedlot lambs fed with diets based on sunflower mealAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of inclusion levels of sunflower meal in feedlot lamb diets on animal productive performance. Forty crossbreed lambs, not castrated, with average initial body weight of 20.17±2.66 kg were feed levels of 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28% of sunflower meal in the diet (dry basis). The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design. The inclusion of sunflower meal in the diet did not affect average dry matter intake (883.58 g per day), feed conversion (4.40), and average water intake (2.59 L per day). The increase in the levels of sunflower meal linearly reduced final weight, total weight gain, average daily gain, and loin eye area. The inclusion level of up to 28% does not affect the average intake of dry matter and water, but reduces animal performance and loin eye area. To obtain the lowest cost with the diet, the inclusion level of sunflower meal can reach up to 28% of dry matter, when its price represents up to 40% of the price of corn and soybean meal blend.
RESUMO -Objetivou-se neste estudo determinar as frações de carboidratos e de compostos nitrogenados de genótipos de capim-elefante, em um único corte aos 56 dias de idade, na primavera. Avaliaram-se 12 genótipos de capim-elefante em um delineamento de blocos ao acaso com três repetições, no qual a parcela experimental foi composta de quatro linhas com 3 m de comprimento, espaçadas 1 m e adubadas com 100 kg de P 2 O 5 , 100 kg de N, 60 kg de K 2 O e 25 kg de micronutrientes/ha. Entre as espécies utilizadas na alimentação de ruminantes, o capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum, Schum.) se destaca, pois é reconhecidamente uma forrageira perene, de alto potencial de produção de matéria seca e alto valor nutricional. Entretanto, necessita de condições climáticas adequadas e solo fértil para produção satisfatória.O capim-elefante tem sido muito utilizado por produtores rurais, principalmente os da pecuária leiteira, que trabalham com margem de lucro pequena. Assim, é de grande importância a avaliação nutricional do capim-elefante para obtenção de genótipos que se destaquem e permitam melhor relação custo/benefício.Os alimentos utilizados para ruminantes devem ser avaliados segundo suas frações de constituintes para sua adequada utilização (Sniffen et al., 1992).
