Antropometric Study of Pre-Echool Children in the Rio Negro Valey, Amazonas State, Brazil. II-BarcelosABSTRACT -A cross-sectional study was carried out in the municipal district of Barcelos (Amazonas State, Brazil) in 1995, involving 240 pre-school children in the urban area and 43 in the interior, in order to evaluate their nutritional status according to antropometric indicators. According to the Gomez classification, in the urban area 41,7% of the children presented some degree of malnutrition, with the mild form DI predominanting (32,1%) and affecting all agegroups indiscrimanately; the prevalence of the severe form DIII was 2,5%. In the interior 37,2% of the children presented some degree of malnutrition, but the prevalence of the more severe forms was lower. According to the criteria of the WHO, 31,1% of the children presented a height for age ratio indicative of chronic undernourishiment, less frequent in the first year of life (10,2%). Weight for height ratios indicative of acute undernutrition were detected in 4,2% of the sample, mainly in children under 12 months old. These results are an indication of the precarious state of health and nutrition of the study population.
I -Hypovitaminosis A.ABSTRACT -The entire scientific production relating to nutrition in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, during the last decades was critically revised. Analysis of this material, complemented by our own recent investigations, provided the basis for the diagnosis of hypovitaminosis A in the Amazon Region. The clinical -opthalmological investigation involved 487 children of both sexes between two and five years old, from Nhamundá and Alvarães, Anamã and Beruri in State of Amazonas. Serum retinol was determined only in 48 children from Nhamundá municipality. The clinical inves¬ tigation did not detect any signs or symptoms indicative of vitamin A deficiency. Normal or high levels of serum retinol were found in 75% and 25%, respectively, of the study sample. These re¬ sults, when added to those derived from the regional litterature, preclude any categorical affirma¬ tion that hypovitaminosis A constitutes a public health problem in the Amazon region.
Eight-five volunteers with age two to six-years old of both sexes were selected, randomly distributed in five groups, having açaí and açaí + camu-camu as sources of iron (2 mg) and vitamin C (40 mg), as well as iron aminoacid chelate with concentra¬ tions of 1 and 2 mg of iron. The iron was distributed daily in the lunch by a period of 120 days. In the characterization of the anemia, the cutting point of hemoglobin was <11g/dL. The results demonstrated that of a total of 85 children, 6 (7%) presented a chronic malnutrition state, being at the end of the study reduced to 4 (4%). The most impact of the use of the açaí was as energy source, resulting in a significant weight gain (1.76 kg) by the children, even when camu-camu was added (1.69 kg). Regarding hemoglobin concentration no significant difference was observed among the children of the groups gave received different sources of iron: açaí (0.71 g/dL); açaí + camu-camu (0.60 g/dL), iron 2 mg (0.88 g/dL); water (0.85 g/dL) and iron 1 mg (0.54 g/dL). However, the recovery of the anemic children was better in the group gave received iron aminoacid chelate in the concentration of 2 mg of iron. It was concluded that açaí has a great potential as energy source and little im...

The aim of this study was to characterize Caramuri Pouteria elegans (A.DC.) Baehni, an exotic fruit of the Amazonian biome to highlight it is a new source nutritional potential. The nutritional (vitamin A, B, C, and E) and volatile composition of the fruits was determined by physical [mass, diameter (longitudinal and transverse), yield] and chemical characterization (pH, acidity, soluble solids, proximate and mineral compositions) using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS). The amount of vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium detected per 100 g of sample was 143.08 mg, 97.50 mg, and 14.75 mg, respectively. Volatile profile by HS-SPME revealed 87 peaks, however, only 26 peaks were noted due to the small peak area (<1.0). Arithmetic and Kovats retention indexes were calculated for compound(s) identification. The percentage of volatiles identification was 88.46%. The majority compound was α-Pinene with 21.77%. The study reveals that Caramuri is a great source of vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C.
