<em>Arabica coffee is a perennial crop hence it has a long selection cycle. Therefore, efforts to shorten the selection process is necessary, such as at seedling stage. This study aims to identify morpho-physiological characters variability among Arabica coffee cultivars at seedling stage. The experiment was conducted at Pakuwon Experimental Garden of Indonesian Industrial and Beverage Crops Research Institute, Sukabumi, from January to October 2017. Seeds collected from open pollinated trees of four arabica coffee cultivars (Ateng Super, P88, Gayo 1, and Gayo 2) were then sown on seedbed and newly-emerged cotyledonous seedlings were transferred immediately into polyethylene bag (polybag). Seedlings were arranged in randomized complete block with 5 replications, each consisted of 10 seedlings of each cultivar. Morpho-physiological characters observed and analyzed were shoot (plant height, lateral shoot formation, number of internodes, internode length, stem diameter, shoot’s dry weight); leaves (number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, L/W ratio, leaf area, stomata density , chlorophyll content); and root (root length, number of primary roots, root volume, root’s dry weight, root/shoot ratio). The result showed value of genetic coefficient of variation (GCV), phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV), and broad sense heritability (h2bs) of plant height characters are classified as high, each of which is 21.66%; 23.66%; and 0.84, respectively. The characters of the stem length and leaf width showed high h2bs value (0.97 and 0.67 respectively), while the KKG and KKF values were classified as moderate (19.60% and 19.88%, respectively and 10.71% and 13.10%, respectively). Those three characters could be utilized as distincitive markers of the four Arabica coffee cultivars.</em>
Context: Communities whose level of understanding and knowledge of disasters are still low can influence community preparedness in the face of disasters from before the onset, during, and after a disaster. Aims: This study aims to analyze the behavior of people in disaster preparedness in Argosari Village, Senduro Subdistrict, Lumajang Regency, Indonesia. Settings and Design: This research was conducted in Argosari village, Senduro sub-district Lumajang regency in April 2018. This study uses quantitative methods and observational with a cross sectional design. Methods and Material: The sampling technique was accidental sampling method of 40 respondents. The independent variables were knowledge and attitudes of the community while the dependent variable was community preparedness for disasters. Statistical analysis used: Data analysis was bivariate analysis using SPSS software. Indept interview was used in collecting qualitative data. Results: According this study, most of the respondent was in moderate and sufficient categories. There was a significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes towards the behavior of natural disaster alertness in Argosari village with a p-value of 0.010 < α = 0.05. Some of the residents, did not yet have sufficient knowledge about natural disaster alertness. Knowledge that is lacking in awareness of natural disasters is influenced by several factors, namely the level of education, employment and age. Conclusions: There was a relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes about disasters against natural disasters in Argosari Village,
<em>The distance between the location of cuttings nursery and scions garden of Robusta coffee is considered as the main obstacle of cuttings viability during distribution period. One alternative to solve the problem is the utilization of packaging to keep the moisture of scions and viability of Robusta coffee cuttings. This study aimed to investigate the packaging technique of scions during the distribution period to maintain the viability. The experiment was conducted in the Integrated Laboratory and Pakuwon Experimental Station, Indonesian Industrial and Beverage Crops Research Institute (IIBCRI), Sukabumi, from January to December 2015. The study used a split plot in time design with 5 replications. The main plot was the distribution periods of scion (7 and 10 days), while the subplot consisted of 3 types of packaging (plastic, paper, and sawdust), and all treatments of packaging type were added with polyacrylamide superabsorbent polymer. Variables observed were the water content; cuttings viability; weight of dry leaves and number of leaves; number, length, volume, and weight of dry roots; auxin and carbohydrate contents at two months after sowing. In addition, the economic effects of packaging types were analyzed. The results showed that the distribution periods of 7 and 10 days were able to maintain the viability of the Robusta coffee cuttings of 55.63%–64.01%. The recommended packaging type is plastic + superabsorbent polyacrylamide polymer for its low cost and the lightest.</em>
Yield of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) plant, in form of cocoa seeds, is produced through the process of sexual reproduction. Pollination plays an important role in the successful formation of cocoa fruit and seeds. In addition, number of ovules per ovary, degree of self-incompatibility, and xenia effect are also affected the final yield. Those characters are determined by genetic factors. Cocoa flowers that are not pollinated fall within 24 hours and fail to develop into fruits and seeds. Pollination intensity up to a certain level showed a significant effect on increasing the percentage of fruit formation and the number of seeds per fruit. The role of pollinating insects, especially from the Ceratopogonidae family, is very important in dispersing pollen grains, allowing the natural pollination process to be occurred. Keywords: fertilization, xenia, meta-xenia, pollinator.
