En France les sciences de la vie et de la Terre sont constituées de deux disciplines, la biologie et la géologie. Cette association, héritée des sciences naturelles, date d'avant les évolutions considérables de ces deux disciplines dans la seconde moitié du 20ème siècle ; elle n'est pas générale dans tous les pays et a été fortement discutée dans les années 90. En analysant, dans le cadre théorique de la problématisation, les types de problèmes travaillés en biologie et en géologie, nous pointons leur proximité - elles ont l'une et l'autre une dimension fonctionnaliste et historique - et leurs différences - dans leur capacité à ramener les événements à des phénomènes - puis nous interrogeons les difficultés que rencontrent les élèves devant ces relations complexes.
En France, les programmes d’enseignement récents de mathématiques, de sciences et de technologie promeuvent l’engagement des élèves de l’école et du collège dans des démarches d’investigation contribuant à l’appropriation de compétences communes. Comment est-il possible qu’une même démarche réunisse à la fois les mathématiques et les sciences ? Notre communication montre que les différences entre les disciplines pointées par l’institution (l’expérimentation, les modalités de validation) font problème. Elle étudie la possibilité de réunir ces disciplines en considérant la construction des savoirs qu’elles opèrent comme des problématisations.
Questionner les rapports entre sciences et récits, comme se propose de le faire ce numéro d'Aster, relève d'un pari démesuré, tant ce qu'ils représentent est complexe et discuté, en particulier dans le champ de la didactique des sciences : Bautier et al. (2000) ne qualifient-elles pas la place de la narration dans le discours scientifique de « très controversée » ? Dans un tel contexte, nous renonçons bien sûr dans cette présentation à l'exhaustivité : elle ne serait qu'illusoire. Mais nous conservons l'idée de rapports polémiques entre sciences et récits : les adoucir consisterait à nier les problèmes qu'ils posent à la construction de savoirs scientifiques.Dans cette présentation, nous choisissons d'approfondir quelques aspects des rôles que tiennent les récits dans la construction des savoirs scientifiques et dans leurs apprentissages. Nous visons le dépassement, d'une part, d'une proximité fusionnelle non interrogée et, d'autre part, d'une opposition rédhibitoire. Cela doit nous permettre de construire quelques repères et de proposer des pistes de réflexion étayées.Dans cette entreprise, nous partons de l'idée que les sciences mobilisent des fictions et nous nous demandons en quoi les récits de la science se démarquent de ceux de la pensée commune (parties 1 et 2 de cette présentation du numéro 44 d'Aster). Cela nous permet d'éprouver deux types de frontières : celle qui sépare la pensée commune et l'activité scientifique ; celle qui démarque l'enseignement scientifique de la vulgarisation scientifique. Nous donnons ensuite quelques préci-sions sur les liens unissant d'une part récit et vulgarisation scientifique et, d'autre part, récit et enseignement scientifique (parties 3 et 4 de cette présentation). Nous nous appuyons pour cela sur les différents articles de ce numéro.Nous proposons en dernier lieu une présentation des articles de ce numéro (partie 5 de cette introduction). Ils sont variés par les contextes, les publics, les associations entre sciences et récits qu'ils donnent à voir, mais ils interpellent tous la construction et la maîtrise de savoirs scientifiques.
Maintenant que les textes institutionnels sur l’enseignement des sciences se préoccupent fortement de l’apprentissage des élèves à partir des problèmes et qu’ils valorisent leurs investigations, il paraît particulièrement intéressant d’étudier ce qui se joue dans les moments de débat où les idées explicatives des élèves s’expriment et se confrontent et les moments qui leur font suite, où l’enseignant cherche à conduire la classe vers une explication raisonnée scientifiquement acceptable au niveau d’enseignement considéré. C’est ce que nous faisons dans notre article, en nous appuyant sur deux séquences forcées (les mouvements corporels, le volcanisme) et en étudiant comment les écoliers du cours moyen (9-11 ans) passent du débat sur leurs idées explicatives au travail sur les argumentations portant sur ces idées. Nous questionnons ce que cette charnière de la démarche permet d’émancipation de la pensée et d’acculturation scientifique des élèves. Nous montrons que, pour ces problèmes qui « parlent » à tous les élèves, les moments de débat peuvent permettre à chacun d’entre eux de s’ouvrir à d’autres possibles explicatifs, donc de se détacher de leur propre production tout en la faisant entrer dans un creuset commun (acculturation/émancipation). Mais ce mouvement d’émanci-pation n’a rien d’immédiat parce que des élèves peuvent se cantonner dans leurs préjugés. Le recours à des artifices didactiques comme les caricatures des différents modèles explicatifs de la classe ou le classement d’argumentation apparaissent comme des facilitateurs tant d’émancipation que d’acculturation.
