Industry 4.0 is a synonym for the confluence of technologies that allows the integration of information technology, data science, and automated equipment, to produce smart industrial systems. The process of inserting new technologies into current conventional environments involves a wide range of disciplines and approaches. This article presents the process that was followed to identify and upgrade one station in an industrial workshop to make it compatible with the more extensive system as it evolves into the Industry 4.0 environment. An information processing kit was developed to upgrade the equipment from an automated machine to an Industry 4.0 station. The kit includes a structure to support the sensor and the data processing unit; this unit consisted of a minicomputer that records the data, graded the performance of the components, and sent the data to the cloud for storage, reporting, and further analysis. The information processing kit allowed the monitoring of the inspection system and improved the quality and speed of the inspection process.
En el presente ensayo a través de ejemplos históricos y definiciones de autores, se explica el concepto de megatendencias y como estas influyen en la sociedad hasta impactar en las organizaciones. Para las organizaciones se describen metodologías para incluir las megatendencias en los modelos de negocios. Adicionalmente, la industria es analizada a lo largo del tiempo y se explica como esta ha llegado hasta la etapa de una cuarta revolución industrial, termino también denominado industria 4.0; en el documento se presenta lo que es para la industria tradicional el cambio a una industria 4.0 mencionando ciertos objetivos y retos que caracterizan esta etapa.Al lector se le es presentado con base al criterio del autor una lista de megatendencias que impactan a la industria 4.0 las cuales son definidas al tiempo en que se describen aplicaciones que tienen en las organizaciones y posibles tecnologías disruptivas que dichas megatendencias traen consigo.
Cities have high demand and limited availability of water and energy, so it is necessary to have adequate technologies to make efficient use of these resources and to be able to generate them. This research focuses on developing and executing a methodology for an urban living lab vocation identification for a new water and energy self-sufficient university building. The methods employed were constructing a technological roadmap to identify global trends and select the technologies and practices to be implemented in the building. Among the chosen technologies were those for capturing and using rain and residual water, the generation of solar energy, and water and energy generation and consumption monitoring. This building works as a living laboratory since the operation and monitoring generate knowledge and innovation through students and research groups that develop projects. The insights gained from this study may help other efforts to avoid pitfalls and better design smart living labs and off-grid buildings.
Purpose -The objective of this study is to provide a support tool for managers to identify future business opportunities.Design/methodology/approach -The proposed model consists of eight-steps. For the first step the authors propose two studies: trends analysis and change drivers' identification; these help to identify the most relevant trends in areas that may affect the business activities. All this information is put into a Delphi process with the help of experts in order to find the common denominator of where the future is going; afterwards, with this information, the authors can build events and scenarios for the business opportunities. Then, a diagnostic of the study area, sector or organization through the dynamic diagnostic methods is performed. Findings -Once the opportunities have been identified, a strategic analysis that allows decision making to prioritize and define the activities or projects that may be achievable in the future is done, and the result of the process is a portfolio of business opportunities projects fully defined and ready to be planned with a roadmap.Originality/value -The proposed model allows the managers to consistently organize their development processes targeted to real business opportunities.
