PurposeThe purpose of this study was to assess whether internal marketing tends to influence the perception of bank employees regarding the strategic orientations of banks toward the market, brand and value. The authors also aimed to determine whether employees' organizational commitment mediates the relationship between internal marketing and the three strategic orientations and whether they influence bank employees' perception of obtaining a competitive advantage.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted a survey with 832 bank employees using an online questionnaire. The authors performed data analysis by modeling structural equations with data estimation using the PLS-SEM.FindingsThe results showed that internal marketing positively influences bank employees' perception of banks' strategic marketing orientations and through that their perception of a competitive advantage. The authors also note that organizational commitment can partially mediate the relationship between internal marketing and the strategic orientations tested in this study.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings indicate that banks' investment in employee valuation tends to generate positive results in relation to their adherence to marketing strategies, with the potential to result in a competitive advantage.Originality/valueThe results demonstrate the strength of internal marketing in the strategic orientations of banks, indicating that having employees who are committed to their bank contributes to the delivery of a high-quality service focused on the external customers, generating a competitive advantage.
Manuscript Type Empirical Research Question/Issue This study seeks to examine the effect of changes in corporate governance levels on the choice of firms' debt financing in a relevant emerging economy, taking advantage of the Sarbanes‐Oxley Act as a natural experiment. Research Findings/Insights Our empirical method uses an experimental design in which we control for observed and unobserved firm heterogeneity via a difference‐in‐differences estimator. We show that firms subjected to this new regulation, which raised governance requirements, observed a positive effect on their access to the credit market, increasing their total debt significantly, via long‐term and private debt, and reducing the cost of debt, indicating that SOX produced economic gains in this aspect. Theoretical/Academic Implications The main contribution of the present paper is to measure the corporate governance effects on firms' debt financing policies, isolated from other contemporaneous events. Furthermore, we develop a simple theoretical model to help in the understanding of the main sources of SOX's effects. Finally, the natural experimental approach deals with the endogenous relation between corporate governance and firms' choices on debt financing, and presents an alternative to instrumental variables techniques. Practitioner/Policy Implications This paper offers insights to policymakers of emerging economies interested in the development of the credit market. Using laws and regulations like the Sarbanes‐Oxley Act, we show that it is possible to improve firms' governance, with a positive impact on firms' ability to access credit.
The aim of this study was to provide evidence regarding the relationship between book-tax differences (BTD), persistence of earnings and accruals and tax planning in the Brazilian scenario. The sample corresponds to all nonfinancial firms listed on the BM&FBovespa that disclosed consolidated financial statements between 2003 and 2012, obtained from the Economática database. The sample period was chosen to straddle the year when the use of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) became mandatory in Brazil. Based on the econometric models presented by Hanlon (2005) and modified by Blaylock et al. (2012), we observed the statistical significance of the regressions in Brazilian context. The coefficients of the variables present indications of less persistence of earnings, besides indicating that earnings became less persistent after adoption of IFRS. The results also provide statistical evidence that temporary large positive BTDs provide useful incremental information about the magnitude of accruals and that by examining accruals it is possible to predict the persistence of earnings and their components.
This study attempts to identify the effect of inequality on growth by using Brazilian data, in order to mitigate comparability problems present in crosscountry studies. The econometric method System-GMM was used and compared with other three econometric methods (OLS, Panel Within-Groups, and GMM) in a dynamic panel, aiming to use a consistent estimator in the presence of endogeneity in the analysis that involves inequality and growth. Our results suggest that the hypothesis of nonlinearity between the variables cannot be rejected. The same conclusion holds for hypothesis of incomplete credit markets and the argument from political economy that redistributive policies mitigate growth.
