Purpose Some universities have a commitment to both academic education and sustainable development, and the sustainable development goals can support several sustainable actions that universities may take as principles and attitudes. From this perspective, the purpose of this study is to present environmentally sustainable practices at a federal university in Brazil and to analyze and discuss the potential environmental impacts associated with an environmentally sustainable practice implemented using life cycle assessment (LCA) and its benefits for the university’s decision-makers. Design/methodology/approach To accomplish that, the study combines a description of environmentally sustainable practices at the 13 campuses of the Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR) in terms of education, water and electricity consumption, waste management and emissions. As a result of this analysis, one campus identified that a high volume of disposable plastic cups were being disposed of, for which the use of reusable plastic cups was introduced. In addition, an LCA study (ISO 14040:2006 and 14044:2006) quantified the benefits of the introduction of said reusable plastic cups. Findings The results show that the university is working on environmentally sustainable initiatives and policies to become greener. At the same time, using a systematic LCA made it possible to measure that replacing disposable plastic cups for reusable ones reduced waste generation but increased water consumption on the campus. Faced with this, a sensitization was carried out to reduce water consumption. Finally, the current study provides lessons on the environmental performance to universities interested in sustainable practices, fostering perspectives for a better world. The findings of this study encourage organizations to accomplish environmental actions toward greener universities. The study shows that institutions need to be reflective and analytical about how even “greening” measures have impacts, which can be mitigated if necessary. Practical implications The sustainable practical implications were reported, and an LCA was conducted to assess potential environmental impacts of reusable plastic cups. It was identified that raw material production is the phase that generates most environmental impacts during the life cycle of the product, along with the consumer use phase, due to the quantity of water used to wash the reusable cups. In addition, the practical contributions of this study are to provide insights to institutions that aim to use environmental actions, i.e. suggestions of sustainable paths toward a greener university. Originality/value This is one of the first studies to investigate and discuss sustainable practices at UTFPR/Brazil. The study assessed one of the practices using a scientific technique (LCA) to assess the impacts of reusable plastic cups distributed to the students of one of the 13 campuses. Although there are other studies on LCA in the literature, the value of this study lies in expanding what has already been experienced/found on the use of LCA to assess environmental practices in university campuses.

Currently, atmospheric emissions coming from industry and means of transportation are expanding at a fast pace across the globe. This study aims to measure the carbon footprint of the Federal University of Technology -Paraná (UTFPR) Ponta Grossa Campus, in terms of the means of transportation used by instructors and students on their commutes between their homes and the university. A survey was applied within the academic community to obtain transportation data. Data were generated using the Umberto NXT Universal software, along with a life-cycle assessment analysis, using the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards ISO 14040, 14044, and the Ecoinvent 3 database. The results show that 90.67% of instructors travel to the university in their cars, which contributes to a high carbon footprint potential; that is, an emission of 51.91 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (kg CO 2equiv. ) per month per instructor. For students, the emission is 6.97 kg CO 2equiv. into the atmosphere per month per individual for those students who use the bus, as 63.32% of the university's students use public transportation to get around. In this way, the study provides a lesson regarding the environmental impact of the academic community, and it generates knowledge and aims at a more sustainable future by reducing environmental impacts through the means of transport that people choose to use. O objetivo desse estudo é analisar o desenvolvimento e identificar as principais características de pesquisas acerca da sustentabilidade no setor público brasileiro e nas instituições públicas de ensino superior. Foi realizado um estudo descritivo, de abordagem quantitativa, utilizando-se de bibliometria mediante a seleção de artigos que tratam sobre o tema no portal de periódicos da Capes, no período de Janeiro de 2010 até Setembro de 2019, contendo em qualquer parte do texto as palavras exatas: sustentabilidade e administração pública; sustentabilidade e setor público; sustentabilidade e organizações públicas; sustentabilidade e instituição pública; sustentabilidade e instituição federal; sustentabilidade e instituição estadual; sustentabilidade e instituição municipal; sustentabilidade e instituição de ensino público; sustentabilidade e instituição de ensino pública; sustentabilidade e universidade pública. Dentre os principais resultados encontrados, destacam-se os seguintes: as instituições mais analisadas nos artigos foram as de ensino superior públicas, sustentando participação na metade do portfólio bibliográfico selecionado; o tema avaliação e desenvolvimento da consciência sustentável foi o mais abordado; o ano de 2019 tende a registrar um número abaixo da média anual de publicações do período; a maioria dos artigos foram desenvolvidos em  quartetos; os periódicos com  maior número de publicações foram de Qualis B2, sendo a Revista de Gestão Ambiental e da Sustentabilidade a possuidora do maior acervo, e a instituição com maior número de publicações a Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC).

Resumo: Em um mercado de acelerada competição e de consumidores cada vez mais exigentes, traçar o perfil do consumidor para adotar melhores estratégias de negociação pode fazer toda a diferença à medida que aumenta a satisfação do cliente. A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo a identificação do perfil de clientes para cada tipo de reclamações identificadas em uma base de dados sobre Help Desk de uma empresa de ração animal. Utilizou-se uma das técnicas de Mineração de Dados, chamada de clustering por meio do algoritmo k-means. A ferramenta selecionada para o respectivo trabalho foi o WEKA. Como resultados foram obtidos 23 clusters, com as respectivas características dos clientes para cada reclamação. Em alguns casos foram gerados 2 ou mais clusters para o mesmo tipo de reclamação , indicando perfis diferentes de clientes para o mesmo tipo de reclamação. Com o resultado, foi possível obter conhecimento das características de cada consumidor para cada tipo de reclamação, permitindo que a organização inove e atenda-os de forma customizada. Abstract:In a fast market competition and increasingly demanding consumers, profiling the consumer to adopt better trading strategies can make all the difference as you increase customer satisfaction. This study aimed to identify the customer profile for each type of complaints identified in a database of Help Desk a pet food company. We used one of the techniques of Data Mining, called clustering using the k-means algorithm. The selected tool into their work was WEKA. As results were obtained 23 clusters, with their characteristics for each customer complaint. In some cases originated two or more clusters for the same type of complaint, indicating different profiles of customers for the same type of complaint. With the result, it was possible to obtain knowledge of the characteristics of each consumer for each type of complaint, allowing the organization to innovate and meet them in a customized manner.
