BackgroundThis study aimed to record the use, and knowledge that residents from São Francisco community (Paraiba, Brazil) have regarding the Cactaceae.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were carried out with 118 informants; 50 men and 68 women. The cacti cited in this study were organised into use categories and use values were calculated. Differences in the values applied to species and use categories by men and women were compared via a G test (Williams).ResultsThe nine species identified were: Cereus jamacaru DC., Melocactus bahiensis (Brtitton & Rose) Luetzelb., Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm-Dyck., Opuntia ficus indica (L.) Mill, Opuntia stricta (Haw.) Haw., Pilosocereus gounellei (F.A.C. Weber) Byles & Rowley, Pilosocereus pachycladus F. Ritter, Tacinga inamoena (K. Schum) N.P. Taylor & Stuppy, Tacinga palmadora (Britton & Rose) N.P. Taylor & Stuppy. In total, 1,129 use citations were recorded, divided into 11 categories. The use value categories with the highest scores were forage (0.42), food (0.30) and construction (building) (0.25). P. pachycladus showed the greatest use value, versatility and number of plant parts used.ConclusionThe survey showed that the Cactaceae is extremely important for several uses and categories attributed to different species. Apart from contributing to the ethnobotanical knowledge of the Cactaceae, another important focus of this study was to reinforce the necessity for further studies that record the traditional knowledge about this plant family, which has been lost in younger generations.
Agroclimatic zoning of cactus pear (Opuntia sp.) for the Paraíba state A B S T R A C TThe cactus pear has become over the years an important forage alternative for brazilian semiarid region, especially during long periods of drought. Despite its importance for agriculture, its cultivation has dispensed basic crop practices and fundamentals technical-scientific basis about its climatic requirements. Thus, the main objective of this study was to elaborate the agroclimatic zoning of cactus pear (Opuntia sp.) for the state of Paraíba. The agroclimatic zoning of cactus pear was based on climatic indicators outlined in the literature and climatological data of precipitation and temperature (mean, maximum, and minimum) from 97 locations in the state of Paraíba. According to the results, the region of 'Borborema' is the most favorable for the cultivation of cactus pear. The regions of ' Agreste' , 'Sertão' , and coastal part of Litoral may be used but with restrictions. However, the cultivation of cactus pear is recommended throughout the state of Paraíba, except the coastal part of the Litoral and the region around Areia. In both cases, the inability is due to excessive precipitation.

ABSTRACTThe quince is Croton sp. plant that makes up the flora of caatinga vegetation denouncing disturbed areas, thus promoting the installation of an ideal space for other species more sensitive and demanding to be located. Through a performance of Action Research was intended to verify from which the spontaneous quince the same potential to produce forest products and byproducts and how plants respond to some management initiatives, the Action Research was developed in Benedict's Farm Amorim, District Galante, municipality of Campina Grande, state of Paraiba -Brazil. Five plots of 20 m x 20 m sampling (. In plots 1 and 2, were sampled plants with diameter less than 3.0 cm in height and 0.30 m considered commercial plants. The commercials were considered not only numbered and labeled. The data obtained allow inferring that the total number of plants per hectare varies from 10,400 copies to 14,450 copies, quince plants make up 98.07% to 99.30% of the total plant. The quince made with commercial samples ranging from 8.33% to 11.49% (850 to 1650 plants / ha) for plots sampled the highest values were related to wood quality (58.82% to 72.72 %), followed by the production of rods (27.27% to 41.18%) where 8.33% (850 plants) 11.49% (1,650 plants) could be categorized as commercial, 58.82% to these 72.72% will be used to produce firewood and 27.27% to 41.18% will be used to produce rods. As the height of plants in these spontaneous quince ranged from 1.80 m a 4.00 m. There that most of the plants that produced rods had diameters of 3.32 cm to 3.47 cm commercial heights 1.98 m 2.10 m respectively. The cylindrical volume of 0.0020 m3 average booed at 0.0021 m3/plant for firewood and 0.0017 to 0.0020 m³ / plant to sticks. The management of quince, (cut) showed values from 10.88 to 14.04 sprouts with the average total of 12.67 shoots per plant. At the shallow cut in one portion, the herbaceous material in sheet form originated was the equivalent of 595.0 kilograms of green leaves / ha, to scrawl the values can vary from 8,400 kg / ha to 12,980 kg / ha showing strength biomass production of quince even under the most adverse.
The forage cactus represents one of the main sources of fodder for livestock in the semi-arid region. However, although it is cultivated on a large scale in several regions, there are still few studies addressing issues of improved management, especially about irrigation and fertilization of recently used varieties, such as those resistant to false carmine cochineal. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of irrigation and sources of organic fertilizer on the productive performance of forage cactus variety Mexican Elephant’s Ear (Opuntia stricta). The experiment was set up at Fazenda Riachão, municipality of Boa Vista, Paraíba. Two types of manure (bovine and caprine) and the control were used, associated with the absence of irrigation and five different depths, which varied from 1.5 to 5.5 L of water per week per plant. A 3x6 factorial design with five repetitions was used in a randomized block design. The depths of water applied promoted a significant increase in the variables analyzed. The goat manure was the most effective in obtaining better values of the number of cladodes per plant and productivity.
