-(Infl uence of environmental variation on Atlantic Forest tree-shrub-layer phytogeography in southeast Brazil). This work assessed data from 32 forest sites in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil, using multivariate analysis to answer the question: Are there fl oristic patterns of the Atlantic Forest tree-shrub layer related to the Serra do Mar and the width of coastal plains in the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo? Three multivariate analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between the tree-shrub fl ora and environmental variation in these 32 study areas. Our analyses demonstrated the infl uence of geo-climatic variation on fl oristic differentiation of tree and shrub species in Atlantic Forest regions generating groups of areas based on similar biotic and abiotic characteristics. These groups support the existence of fl oristic patterns within the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and refl ect tree-shrub species substitution between the study areas as a consequence of annual rainfall, altitude, and mean annual temperature variation linked to a change in the position of the Serra do Mar and an increase in coastal plain width. Preferential species were cited for each group and should be considered in restoration and conservation programs for the phytoecological regions represented by the groups.
Abstract Nutrient cycling in the eucalyptus plantation with a regeneration of native species in understory. The nutrient cycling process is important for the sustainability of natural and planted forest formations. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of Nutrient cycling in the eucalyptus plantation with a regeneration of native species in understory. For deposition and decomposition of litter were used conical collectors and litter bags respectively. Subsequently were separated the foliar fractions of eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) (EUC), the native understory regeneration (REG) and a control with fraction of Semideciduous Forest species (FES). The sequence of the return of nutrients through the leaves followed the same order for all foliar fractions: N> K>P. The leaves of FES deposited more macronutrients on the ground, while EUC and REG contributed the same amount. The leaf degradation was higher for FES, then the REG and EUC. The rate of nutrients release from the EUC leaves followed the order K>P>N, while FES and REG this return following order N>K>P and K>P>N respectively. These results demonstrate the importance of litter conservation in the study site, especially in the protection and nutrient return of these soils.
National Forest Inventories are important primary data sources for large-scale forest resource surveys, in which volume estimates of sampled trees are essential for quantitative analysis. Volume prediction models in natural forests are scarce in Brazil due to legal restrictions for cutting trees, especially in the Atlantic Forest. This study aimed to fit volume models for the main forest types and timber species of the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro state, considering two hypotheses: (I) generic volume models provide greater generalizability of estimates; however, (II) they may reduce the accuracy of forest typeand species-specific predictions. Four linear models with logarithmic transformation of variables were evaluated to fit volume models for generic and specific datasets, which correspond to the main forest types and timber species. Goodness-of-fit statistics were calculated to compare the accuracy and efficiency of the models, and selected models were validated through leave-oneout cross-validation procedures. The estimates obtained by generic and specific models were compared by non-parametric hypothesis tests. Generic models showed similar predictions to the specific models for forest types and timber species, with similar potential for stem and total volume predictions. Therefore, generic models can be used for Atlantic Forests in Rio de Janeiro state, while specific models are recommended to obtain more detailed local estimates.
