It further evaluates which species are found at threatened species lists and the similarity that the studied forest component has with other nearby locations with similar vegetation. Data gathering relied on the joint effort of arbitrary walks and sampling units known as Transect. The same sampling criterion was applied at both approaches (DBH greater than or equal to 5 cm). A similarity analysis, followed by a Cluster analysis, was used to compare the studied vegetation component. Similarity calculations were based in the Bray-Curtis coefficient. We detected a total of 235 species. These are divided in 134 genera and 52 families. The richest families are Myrtaceae (38 spp.), Fabaceae (20 spp.) and Rubiaceae (20 spp.). The richest genera are Eugenia (16 spp.), Myrcia (8 spp.) and Ocotea (6 spp.). Nineteen of the detected species are currently listed as threatened and the studied forest component is mostly resembled to the vegetation at Rio Bonito (RJ). Our evidence shows that the evaluated tree and shrub layer seems to be well preserved and represents an important area for conservational efforts. The results additionally indicate that this vegetation seems to have a greater floristic resemblance to drier and further locations, rather than to more humid and close ones. Diversity distribution and floristic differentiation of the coastal lowland vegetation: implications for the conservation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Floristic differentiation and vegetation definition is an important step to recognize biome distribution and for biodiversity conservation. Here, we aim to verify if the distribution of the costal lowland vegetation in Brazilian littoral is congruent with climatic gradient and the previous vegetation definitions. Additionally we discussed the importance of terms for the Atlantic Forest conservation. Our study was based on floristic and geoclimatic data from 58 published surveys. We generate a checklist of 1088 woody species and verified species distribution according to environmental gradient using a Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). We compared DCA's groups with the a priori vegetation definition and generate an a posteriori classification using TWINSPAN. DCA and TWINSPAN resulted in groups determined mainly by rainfall (r = -0.65) and soil sandiness (r = -0.71). Those groups were not congruent with both the previous vegetation definitions. The coastal lowland vegetation comprises two distinctive floristic groups representing forests and scrubs that occur in wetter climates (Ombrophilous lowland forests) in the Brazilian states of Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo and in drier climates of Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro (Restinga-Northern group) and Rio Grande do Sul (Restinga-Southern group) states. The floristic and historical relationships between Ombrophylous lowland forests and Restingas suggest that conservation initiatives should be more conservative and treat collectively all coastal lowland vegetation as a biodiversity hotspot.

Vascular plant diversity in a Brazilian hotspot: floristic knowledge gaps and tools for conservation

We present one of the first lists of vascular plants for an area in the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo (ES). Field expeditions were carried out between 2011 and 2016 in four portions of vegetation in Serra do Valentim, ES, to collect samples of reproductive botanical material. After identification, we found a total of 590 species distributed in 327 genera and 112 botanical families. Orchidaceae (61 spp.), Melastomataceae (40), Asteraceae (37), Rubiaceae (29) and Polypodiaceae and Solanaceae (24) were some of the families with the highest species richness. We report 11 new records of species for Espírito Santo, three new species for science and 54 endangered species, demonstrating the floristic importance of Serra do Valentim. Our efforts were decisive in helping to fill knowledge gaps regarding the flora of Espirito Santo state, providing a basis for conducting species conservation and enhancing the value of small forest remnants, which should be considered in research and inventory proposals.
