Handgrip strength was positively associated with pulmonary function in a dose-dependent manner. Given the health implications of pulmonary function, timely detection of weaker handgrip strength in older people may be useful in assessing potential pulmonary function impairment.
A rapidly aging population in Korea has led to increased attention in the field of anti-aging medicine. The purpose of anti-aging medicine is to slow, stop, or reverse the aging process and its associated effects, such as disability and frailty. Anti-aging medicine is emerging as a growing industry, but many supplements or protocols are available that do not have scientific evidence to support their claims. In this review, the mechanisms of action and the clinical implications of anti-aging interventions were examined and explained. Calorie restriction mimetics define compounds that imitate the outcome of calorie restriction, including an activator of AMP protein kinase (metformin), inhibitor of growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 axis (pegvisomant), inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin (rapamycin), and activator of the sirtuin pathway (resveratrol). Hormonal replacement has also been widely used in the elderly population to improve their quality of life. Manipulating healthy gut microbiota through prebiotic/probiotics or fecal microbiota transplantation has significant potential in anti-aging medicine. Vitamin D is expected to be a primary anti-aging medicine in the near future due to its numerous positive effects in the elderly population.
Serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and serum uric acid (SUA) are biomarkers that predict chronic inflammation and cardiovascular dysfunction. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between sleep duration, hsCRP, and SUA in Korean women. Cross-sectional data from the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was analyzed. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for an association between higher hsCRP (>2.0 mg/L) or higher SUA (>5.6 mg/dL) and sleep duration were calculated using multiple logistic regression analyses after adjusting for potential confounders. In total, 6151 women were included in the analysis. There was a U-shaped relationship between continuous sleep duration, hsCRP, and SUA. Compared to those who slept for 7–8 h, the ORs (95% CIs) for higher hsCRP were 1.43 (0.95–2.16) in short sleepers and 1.64 (1.09–2.48) in long sleepers after adjusting for confounders. Compared with those who slept for 7–8 h, the ORs (95% CIs) for higher SUA were 1.54 (1.04–2.26) in short sleepers and 1.94 (1.27–2.96) in long sleepers after adjusting for confounders. We found a U-shaped association between sleep duration, hsCRP, and SUA in Korean women. 7–8 h sleep was associated with lower level of hsCRP and SUA in Korean women.
IntroductionOxidative stress plays a key role in the pathophysiology of hypertension development. The oxidative balance score (OBS) comprises dietary and lifestyle pro- and anti-oxidant components and reflects the overall oxidative stress burden. We aimed to evaluate the association between the OBS and new-onset hypertension (HTN) using large, community-based, prospective Korean cohort data.MethodsAmong 10,030 participants aged 40–69 years included in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, the data of 5,181 participants were analyzed. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for new-onset HTN according to sex-specific OBS quartile groups were calculated using univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analyses.ResultsDuring the mean 13.6-year follow-up period, 1,157 men and 1,196 women developed new-onset HTN. Compared to the Q1 group, the adjusted HRs (95%CI) for new-onset HTN in the Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups were 0.96 (0.82–1.16), 0.85 (0.72–0.99), and 0.71 (0.59–0.86) in men and 0.81 (0.69–0.95), 0.81(0.68–0.95), and 0.70 (0.57–0.84) in women, respectively.DiscussionIndividuals with high OBS are at lower risk of developing HTN. This study suggests that a healthy lifestyle and antioxidant rich diet could be a preventive strategy for HTN.
We investigated the relationship between the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and muscle strength through measurement of handgrip strength. We conducted a cross-sectional study of a population representative of older Korean from the 2014–2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 2512 community-dwelling men and women aged 65 years and older were included. The BMR was calculated with the Singapore equation and handgrip strength was measured using a digital dynamometer. The patients were categorized into handgrip strength quartiles and a weighted one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for continuous variables and a weighted chi-squared test for categorical variables were performed. Pearson, Spearman correlation analysis, univariate, and multivariate linear regression were performed. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was also performed to determine the association between basal metabolic rate and handgrip strength quartiles after adjusting for confounding factors. The BMR increased according to handgrip strength quartile after adjusting for age, BMI, relative fat mass, comorbidity number, resistance exercise, aerobic physical activity, household income, educational level, smoking status, and alcohol ingestion in both sexes (p < 0.001). Handgrip strength has a positive association with the BMR in older Korean people. Therefore, muscle strength exercises should be considered for regulating the BMR in the older people.
Background and aims: The new visceral adiposity index (NVAI) is an indirect marker of visceral adipose tissue recently developed using a Korean population. Here we examined the association of NVAI with coronary artery calcification and arterial stiffness in asymptomatic Korean patients. Methods and results: We analyzed data from 60,938 asymptomatic Korean adults. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for coronary artery calcification score (CACS) > 100 and brachial eankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) !14 m/s were calculated across NVAI tertiles using multiple logistic regression analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under the curve (AUC) analyses were used to assess the ability of NVAI to predict moderate to high risk of cardiovascular disease. The prevalence of moderate and high risk of cardiovascular disease increased significantly as the NVAI tertile increased. The odds ratio (95% CI) of the highest NVAI tertile for CACS >100 was 5.840 (5.101e6.686) for men and 18.916 (11.232e31.855) for women, after adjusting for confounders. All NVAI AUC values were significantly higher than the AUC values for other visceral adiposity markers. Conclusions: This study provides the evidence that NVAI is independently and positively associated with coronary calcification and arterial stiffness in asymptomatic Korean adults.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
