QTL mapping provides usefull information for breeding programs since it allows the estimation of genomic locations and genetic effects of chromossomal regions related to the expression of quantitative traits. The objective of this study was to map QTL related to several agronomic important traits associated with grain yield: ear weight (EW), prolificacy (PROL), ear number (NE), ear length (EL) and diameter (ED), number of rows on the ear (NRE) and number of kernels per row on the ear (NKPR). Four hundred F2:3 tropical maize progenies were evaluated in five environments in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The genetic map was previously estimated and had 117 microssatelite loci with average distance of 14 cM. Data was analysed using Composite Interval Mapping for each trait. Thirty six QTL were mapped and related to the expression of EW (2), PROL (3), NE (2), EL (5), ED (5), NRE (10), NKPR (5). Few QTL were mapped since there was high G×E interaction. Traits EW, PROL and EN showed high genetic correlation with grain yield and several QTL mapped to similar genomic regions, which could cause the observed correlation. However, further analysis using apropriate statistical models are required to separate linked versus pleiotropic QTL. Five QTL (named Ew1, Ne1, Ed3, Nre3 and Nre10) had high genetic effects, explaining from 10.8% (Nre3) to 16.9% (Nre10) of the phenotypic variance, and could be considered in further studies.
-The objective of this work was to determine the relative importance of phosphorus acquisition efficiency (PAE -plant P uptake per soil available P), and phosphorus internal utilization efficiency (PUTIL -grain yield per P uptake) in the P use efficiency (PUE -grain yield per soil available P), on 28 tropical maize genotypes evaluated at three low P and two high P environments. PAE was almost two times more important than PUTIL to explain the variability observed in PUE, at low P environments, and three times more important at high P environments. These results indicate that maize breeding programs, to increase PUE in these environments, should use selection index with higher weights for PAE than for PUTIL. The correlation between these two traits showed no significance at low or at high P environments, which indicates that selection in one of these traits would not affect the other. The main component of PUTIL was P quotient of utilization (grain yield per grain P) and not the P harvest index (grain P per P uptake). Selection to reduce grain P concentration should increase the quotient of utilization and consequently increase PUTIL.Index terms: Zea mays, mineral nutrition, phosphorus acquisition, phosphorus use efficiency, plant breeding, quotient of utilization.
ABSTRACT GENETIC PARAMETERS OF DROUGHT TOLERANCE RELATED TRAITS IN TROPICAL MAIZEThe selection of drought tolerance related traits in maize has been object of interest in improvement programs, mainly in function of the selection inefficiency for grain yield on these conditions. The objective of this work was to estimate genetic parameters in two populations of tropical maize. Two populations (called D and U) with 256 F 2:3 progenies had been evaluated in a 16x16 simple lattice, in seven and nine environments with population density of 62,500 plants ha -1 . Significant differences were observed among line (P), environments (A) and for the P x A interaction in both populations. The heritability coefficients at progenies level average had varied between 73.52% for prolificacy in population D and 95.88% for female flowering (FF) in population U. Grain yield (PG) presented significant genetic correlation in populations U and D, respectively, with prolificacy (0,79 and 0.88) and female flowering (-0,76 and -0,44); in population U with male flowering (-0.74) and; in population D with stay-green (-0.50). No genetic correlation was observed between PG and anthesis-silking interval (IF). Estimated of genetic parameters suggest that the use of selection indices that include, besides PG, characters as prolificacy, FF and SG in the selection process under conditions of normal water supply, could lead to the development of cultivars with high ...
New genetic variance and covariance components related to intra- and interpopulational recurrent selection methods have been theoretically developed by Souza Jr. (Rev. Bras. Genet. 16: 91-105, 1993) to explain the failure of these methods to concomitantly develop hybrid and per se populations. Intra- and interpopulation half-sib progenies of 100 genotypes were sampled from maize (Zea mays L.) populations BR-106 and BR-105 to estimate variance and covariance components and to compare the expected responses to reciprocal (RRS), intrapopulational (HSS), and modified (MRS) recurrent selection in interpopulation hybrid, populations per se, and to determine heterosis. Four sets of 100 progenies, two intra- and two interpopulational, were evaluated in partially balanced 10 x 10 lattices arranged in split-blocks with two replications in two years (1991/92 and 1992/93) and two locations in Piracicaba, SP. Data for ear weight, plant and ear height, and ear by plant height ratio were recorded. Populations and interpopulation crosses were high yielding and showed high breeding potential for production of hybrids from inbred lines. Mid parent and the highest parent heterosis were relatively high, but lower than values reported for these populations under other environmental conditions. Additive variance estimates of populations per se and interpopulation crosses confirmed the high potential of these materials. The magnitude of the variance estimates for the deviations from intra- and interpopulation additive effects (<img src="http:/img/fbpe/gmb/v21n4/1918f1.jpg" alt="1918f1.jpg (1262 bytes)" align="middle"> for BR-106 and <img src="http:/img/fbpe/gmb/v21n4/1918f3.jpg" alt="1918f3.jpg (1259 bytes)" align="middle">for BR-105) and covariance between additive effects with these deviations (<img src="http:/img/fbpe/gmb/v21n4/1918f2.jpg" alt="1918f2.jpg (2022 bytes)" align="middle"> for BR-106 and <img src="http:/img/fbpe/gmb/v21n4/1918f4.jpg" alt="1918f4.jpg (1995 bytes)" align="middle"> for BR-105) indicated that these new components can significantly influence the effectiveness of breeding methods. Genetic component estimates for BR-105 had relatively small errors, with <img src="http:/img/fbpe/gmb/v21n4/1918f4.jpg" alt="1918f4.jpg (1995 bytes)" align="middle"> negative for all traits. Estimates of <img src="http:/img/fbpe/gmb/v21n4/1918f1.jpg" alt="1918f1.jpg (1262 bytes)" align="middle">and <img src="http:/img/fbpe/gmb/v21n4/1918f2.jpg" alt="1918f2.jpg (2022 bytes)" align="middle"> had relatively larger errors for BR-106. The MRS method was more effective than the RRS and HSS methods in producing hybrids from inbred lines. The choice of a population tester for the MRS method based on population means per se may be incorrect. The additional use, when possible, of intra- and interpopulation additive genetic variances from each population would be more appropriate.
Inheritance of the delayed senescence in maizeAbstract -The objective of this research was to study the inheritance of delayed senescence in maize. Partial diallel crosses among 50 inbred lines and five testers were made. The 250 crosses, along with six commercial hybrids used as checks, were evaluated at eight environments in lattices 16x16 with two replications per environment. The diallel crosses were analyzed following the method 4 model 1 of Griffing, extended to multiple environments. The contribution of the general combining ability (CGA) for the expression of the stay-green trait (69.06%) was greater than the specific combining ability (SCA) (30.94%), showing that additive effects are more important than non-additive effects for the expression of this trait. Both GCA and SCA interacted significantly with the environments, indicating that the selection for this trait should be based on the means across environments.Index terms: Zea mays, SCA, GCA, diallel crossing, stay-green.
ESTIMATES OF THE NUMBER OF S 1 PROGENIES FOR RECURRENT SELECTION IN MAIZEABSTRACT -This research aimed to estimate the appropriate number of S 1 progenies that should be used in recurrent selection programs in maize (Zea mays L.). Two-hundred S 1 progenies from BR-105 and BR-106 maize populations were evaluated in two environments in randomized complete blocks designs with three replications per environment. The progenies from each population were random split in groups of twenty-five progenies, supplying sample sizes from twenty-five to two-hundred progenies. For each sample, genetic and phenotypic variances, coefficients of heritability as well as their respective confidence intervals were estimated for the following traits: ear weight (EW), plant height (PH), ear height (EH) and prolificacy (PR). As the number of progenies increased, the width of the confidence intervals of the estimated parameters decreased for all traits evaluated and for both populations. For the main trait, ear weight, the estimates of the genetic and phenotypic variances, the coefficients of heritability and the confidence intervals stabilized around 175-200 progenies for both populations. For the other traits, PH, EH, and PR the estimated parameters stabilized around 125, 125, and 175 progenies, respectively, for both populations. Hence, for recurrent selection programs, at least 200 S 1 progenies should be used regardless of the genetic type of the population.
