Although Brazil holds one of the largest commercial cattle herd in the world, about 209 million head (IBGE, 2011), it is observed that the average stocking rate is very low, resulting in lower potential productivity of the livestock sector. Among the various factors that contribute to this low productivity, can highlight the seasonality in food supply as an aggravating factor for the productive sector. Basically, in all regions of Brazil, seasonality is characterized by variations in the availability and quality of forage in response to changes in climatic conditions which do not allow forage plants have uniform growth throughout the year. The choice of forage grass to form a pasture, must be very careful to increase their productivity of dry matter and crude protein content, with seasonal balance and acceptability by animals. The pasture management aims to achieve balance between the performance / quality of forage produced, maintaining the desired botanical composition. Associated with these factors has been able to obtain good results by field of animal production. To obtain proper pasture management, it is necessary to know beyond the physical, structural and anatomical characteristics of forage species, the amount of forage offered to animals and nutritive value, but also the amount of forage being consumed by the animal and nutritional value the forage actually consumed.
Context Yields from Brazilian beef-production systems do not always match the expected potential of a forage-based beef-production system. This efficiency is dependent on adjustments of grazing intensity and supplement utilisation to achieve higher bodyweight gain and lower methane emission. Therefore, more studies are necessary to evaluate the association between pasture management and supplement doses. Aims The aim of the present study was to determine nutrient intake, nutrient digestibility, animal performance, carcass characteristics and enteric methane emissions of young Nellore bulls grazing Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu pastures. Methods One hundred and forty-eight yearling bulls (230 ± 17 kg) were randomly assigned to a grazing-by-supplementation strategy that was designed to allocate three different sward heights with differing levels of supplementation during the wet season. Treatment combinations were (1) low sward height with high supplementation (LH-HS, 15-cm sward height and supplementation at 0.6% of bodyweight (BW)); (2) low height with moderate supplementation (LH-MS, 15 cm and 0.3% BW); (3) moderate height with moderate supplementation (MH-MS, 25 cm and 0.3% BW); (4) moderate height with low supplementation (MH-LS, 25 cm and 0.1% BW); (5) high height with low supplementation (HH-LS, 35 cm and 0.1% BW); and (6) high height with no supplementation (HH-WS, 35 cm). Key results Bulls in the HH groups had a greater herbage intake than did those in the LH groups (P < 0.01). Bulls in the LH-HS treatment resulted in a greater (P < 0.01) carcass average daily gain than that obtained with LH-MS, MH-LS or HH-WS treatment. Higher stocking rate with the LH treatment resulted in greater gains per hectare in terms of both BW and carcass (P < 0.01). Carcass yield was greater for bulls maintained with the LH-HS treatment (54.3% BW). Higher enteric methane emissions were observed from bulls under the HH treatments (P < 0.01). Conclusions Comparing carcass gains per hectare and low methane emissions, the present study indicated that pasture management towards a low sward height combined with 0.3% or 0.6% BW supplementation can result in a greater nutrient utilisation efficiency of bulls. Implications Results provided information to obtain better gains per animals and area, also decreasing methane emission of beef cattle production system.
Records of birth weight (BW) and weights standardized to 210 (W210); 365 (W365) and 550 (W550) of age in the Nellore breed were used to estimate variance components of genetic effects and predict genetic values of sires. The model included the fixed effects of contemporary group and cow age at calving as co-variable, and the additive and maternal genetic, permanent maternal environmental, and temporary environmental random effects. Estimates of means and standard deviations for BW, W210; W365 and W550 were 32.76 ± 3.74; 184.30 ± 29.02; 240.31 ± 41.85 and 322.12 ± 60.77, respectively. A significant additive genetic variability was detected for all weights. The permanent maternal environmental variance showed greater relevance on weaning weight, and it was practically inexistent after weaning. For the maternal genetic variance, the estimate for birth weight was more significant as compared with weaning weight. The estimated heritability values for BW, W210; W365 and W550 were 0.37 ± 0.02; 0.36 ± 0.03; 031 ± 0.01 and 0.38 ± 0.02, respectively. Genetic correlations between birth weight and other weights were of low magnitude, with high values of weights at other ages. The use of sires of higher genetic value for total maternal effect makes it possible to use sires that are more positive for weaning weight and also for year and yearling weight.

Several studies on weaning weight in cattle, which show great variation in the average of this feature. This variation may be the result of genetic variation between arrays, food, reproductive and health management that varies from region to region and from farm to farm, in addition to the different programs of selection and genetic improvement of beef cattle used in the country.
