The goal of this study was to examine whether supplemental fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and (or) mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) influenced indices of gut health of dogs. Adult female dogs (n = 4) surgically fitted with ileal cannulas were fed a dry, extruded, kibble diet twice daily. At each feeding, the following treatments were administered: 1) Control (no FOS or MOS); 2) 1 g FOS; 3) 1 g MOS; or 4) 1 g FOS + 1 g MOS. Fecal, ileal and blood samples were collected during the last 4 d of each 14-d period to measure protein catabolite concentrations, microbial populations, immune characteristics and nutrient digestibilities. Treatment means were compared using preplanned orthogonal contrasts. Dogs supplemented with MOS had lower (P = 0.05) fecal total aerobes and tended to have greater (P = 0.13) Lactobacillus populations. Ileal immunoglobulin (Ig) A concentrations were greater (P = 0.05) in dogs supplemented with FOS + MOS vs. control. Lymphocytes (% of total white blood cells) were greater (P < 0.05) in dogs supplemented with MOS. Serum IgA concentrations also tended (P = 0.13) to be greater in dogs supplemented with MOS. Dogs supplemented with FOS and FOS + MOS had lower (P < 0.05) fecal total indole and phenol concentrations. Dogs supplemented with MOS tended to have lower ileal DM (P = 0.149) and OM (P = 0.146) digestibilities vs. control. Results of this study suggest that dietary supplementation of FOS and MOS may have beneficial effects on colonic health and immune status of dogs.

The objective of this research was to determine whether fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and (or) Lactobacillus acidophilus (LAC) affected concentrations of gut microbial populations, fermentative end products and nutrient digestibilities in healthy adult dogs. Two experiments were performed using 40 adult dogs (20 dogs/experiment). Dogs in each experiment were randomly assigned to one of 4 treatments. Twice daily, treatments were given orally via gelatin capsules: 1) 2 g sucrose + 80 mg cellulose; 2) 2 g FOS + 80 mg cellulose; 3) 2 g sucrose + 1 x 10(9) colony forming units (cfu) LAC; or 4) 2 g FOS + 1 x 10(9) cfu LAC. Data were analyzed by the General Linear Models procedure of SAS. In Experiment 1, FOS resulted in lower (P = 0.08) Clostridium perfringens and greater fecal butyrate (P = 0.06) and lactate (P < 0.05) concentrations. In Experiment 2, FOS supplementation increased (P < 0.05) bifidobacteria, increased lactobacilli (P = 0.08), increased fecal lactate (P = 0.06) and butyrate (P < 0.05), and decreased (P < 0.05) fecal ammonia, isobutyrate, isovalerate and total branched-chain fatty acid concentrations. Dogs fed LAC had the highest fecal concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and methanethiol in Experiment 1 and dimethyl sulfide in Experiment 2, whereas dogs fed FOS had the lowest concentrations of these compounds. Overall, FOS appeared to enhance indices of gut health by positively altering gut microbial ecology and fecal protein catabolites, whereas LAC was more effective when fed in combination with FOS rather than fed alone.

Two experiments were conducted to determine U.S. soybean meal (SBM) variation. In experiment 1, SBM from 55 U.S. processors was evaluated. Significant (P < 0.05) but numerically small differences were detected in dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) concentrations. Crude protein (CP) concentrations (51.6-54.6%) were higher (P < 0.05) in SBM produced in the southern U.S. Lipid and total dietary fiber concentrations also differed (P < 0.05). The protein dispersibility index was affected (P < 0.05) by the source of SBM. In experiment 2, soybeans and resultant SBMs were obtained from 10 U.S. processing plants. Soybean DM, OM, and CP concentrations differed (P < 0.05). Soybean meal varied (P < 0.05) in CP (48.2-56.2%), acid-hydrolyzed fat (3.3-9.2%), total dietary fiber (17.0-20.7%), and lysine concentrations. Soybean meal carbohydrate composition was also affected by processing conditions. These results indicate a significant variation in chemical and nutritional characteristics of U.S. SBM from different sources.

Fructans are fermentable carbohydrates and include short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS), inulin, and hydrolyzed inulin (oligofructose, OF). Two studies with dogs were designed to examine the effects of low concentrations of fructans on nutrient digestibilities, fecal microbial populations, and endproducts of protein fermentation, and fecal characteristics. In Exp. 1, 11 adult male beagles were fed corn-based, kibbled diets supplemented with or without OF to provide 1.9 +/- 0.6 g/d. Dietary inclusion of OF decreased (P < 0.05) nutrient digestibilities, but did not affect fecal characteristics. Increasing OF concentration tended (P < 0.06) to linearly decrease fecal ammonia concentrations, but not those of branched-chain fatty acids (BCFA), amines, indole, or phenols. Fecal concentrations of total short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) and butyrate tended to be higher in OF-supplemented dogs (P < 0.10), as was the ratio of bifidobacteria to total anaerobes (P = 0.15). In Exp. 2, ileally cannulated adult female hounds were fed a meat-based kibbled diet and were assigned to four scFOS treatments (0, 1, 2, or 3 g/d) in a 4 x 4 Latin square design. Ileal nutrient digestibilities tended to increase (P < 0.15) with increasing concentrations of scFOS. On a DMI basis, fecal output tended to decrease linearly (P < 0.10) in response to increasing scFOS supplementation, whereas fecal score tended to exhibit a quadratic response (P = 0.12). In general, fecal concentrations of SCFA, BCFA, ammonia, phenols, and indoles were not altered by supplemental scFOS. Supplementation of scFOS increased fecal concentrations of total aerobes (P < 0.05) and decreased concentrations of Clostridium perfringens (P < 0.05). From these data, it seems that low levels of supplemental fructans have divergent effects on nutrient digestibility and fermentative endproducts, but do not adversely affect nutrient digestibility or fecal characteristics and may improve colonic microbial ecology in dogs.

Both soybean composition and processing conditions impact the nutritional quality of soybean meal. The objective of this experiment was to compare nutrient compositions of soybeans grown under diverse environmental conditions in a variety of locations. Dry matter, organic matter, and ash concentrations differed in soybeans collected within the countries of Brazil, China, and the United States, although these differences were generally small or due to uniqueness of a particular source. Large differences in dry matter were detected among countries. Differences in crude protein, amino acid, and lipid concentrations of soybeans were detected both within and among countries. Soybeans from China had a greater crude protein concentration (42.14%) than those from Brazil (40.86%), whereas soybeans from China had a lower lipid concentration (17.25%) than those from either Brazil or the United States (18.66 and 18.70%, respectively). Environmental conditions under which soybeans are grown have a great impact on chemical composition and nutrient quality.

The digestion of legumes, cereal grains, cereal and potato flours and grain-based foods in dogs was studied using two in vitro model systems. The first simulated the stomach and small intestine through the additions of acid and enzymes and large bowel fermentation through use of fecal inocula from dogs, and the second simulated small intestinal fermentation using canine ileal chyme as the bacterial source. All substrates were analyzed for total dietary fiber (TDF) including insoluble and soluble components, and starch fractions: rapidly digestible starch, slowly digestible starch, resistant starch (RS) and total starch. Legumes had high TDF and RS concentrations (mean 36.5 and 24.7%, respectively), resulting in lower ileal digestible starch and total digestible starch concentrations (mean 21 and 31%, respectively). Seventy-four percent of the TS in the cereal grains group was rapidly digestible starch plus slowly digestible starch compared with the flour group, where the corresponding value was 95%. This related to the processing of cereals to flours, in which TDF and RS concentrations were reduced markedly. This increased ileal digestible starch concentrations in the flour group (65%) versus the cereal grains group (60%). Ileal digestion of starch in grain-based food products like macaroni and spaghetti was high (96 and 92%, expressed as a percentage of TS, respectively). Fermentation of substrates with ileal microflora was influenced by substrate chemical composition, with the flour group exhibiting the highest organic matter disappearance values. The legume group had a high total short-chain fatty acid concentration (7.8 mmol/g organic matter fermented), perhaps as a result of fermentation of TDF as well as starch components. A database such as this one provides information about utilization of foods and feeds in the dog and potentially in humans.

Plant-based protein sources are generally less variable in chemical composition than animal-based protein sources. However, relatively few data are available on the nutrient digestibilities of plant-based protein sources by companion animals. The effects of including selected soybean protein sources in dog diets on nutrient digestion at the ileum and in the total tract, as well as on fecal characteristics, were evaluated. Six protein sources were used: soybean meal (SBM), Soyafluff 200W (soy flour), Profine F (traditional aqueous-alcohol extracted soy protein concentrate [SPC 1]), Profine E (extruded SPC [SPC 2]), Soyarich I (modified molecular weight SPC [SPC 3]), and poultry meal (PM). All diets were extruded and kibbled. Test ingredients varied in CP and fat contents; however, diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isocaloric. Nutrient intakes were similar, except for total dietary fiber (TDF), which was lower (P < 0.01) for dogs fed the PM diet. Apparent ileal digestibilities of DM, OM, fat, and TDF were not different among treatments; however, CP digestibility at the terminal ileum was higher (P < 0.01) for diets containing soy protein sources than for PM. Total tract CP digestibility was greater (P < 0.01) for soy protein-containing diets than for PM. Apparent total tract digestibilities of DM, OM, fat, and TDF were not different among treatments. Apparent amino acid digestibilities at the terminal ileum, excluding methionine, threonine, alanine, and glycine, were higher (P < 0.01) for soy protein-containing diets than for PM. Dogs fed SPC diets had lower (P < 0.01) fecal outputs (g asis feces/g DMI) than dogs fed the SF diet, and dogs fed SBM tended (P < 0.11) to have lower fecal outputs than dogs fed the SF diet. However, dogs fed the PM diet had lower (P < 0.03) fecal outputs than dogs fed SPC-containing diets. Fecal outputs and scores reflected the TDF and nonstructural carbohydrate contents of the soy protein fraction. Soy protein sources are well utilized by the dog prior to the terminal ileum, and SPC offers a viable alternative to PM as a protein source in dry, extruded canine diets.
