Fructooligosaccharides and Lactobacillus acidophilus Modify Gut Microbial Populations, Total Tract Nutrient Digestibilities and Fecal Protein Catabolite Concentrations in Healthy Adult Dogs

Abstract: The objective of this research was to determine whether fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and (or) Lactobacillus acidophilus (LAC) affected concentrations of gut microbial populations, fermentative end products and nutrient digestibilities in healthy adult dogs. Two experiments were performed using 40 adult dogs (20 dogs/experiment). Dogs in each experiment were randomly assigned to one of 4 treatments. Twice daily, treatments were given orally via gelatin capsules: 1) 2 g sucrose + 80 mg cellulose; 2) 2 g FOS + 80… Show more

“…As in cats, the major SCFA in dogs are butyrate, acetate, and propionate (Swanson et al 2002). A butyrate-producer bacterium that has attracted much attention for its role in intestinal health of humans is Faecalibacterium prausnitzii (Sokol et al 2009).…”

“…SENSI and ADULT are supplemented with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS, 0.5% of the formula). FOS is soluble fibres that act as prebiotics and influence positively the composition of the intestinal microbiota [28]. In addition, bacterial fermentation of such fibres increases the concentration of short chain fatty acids, mainly butyrate, which have a trophic role and increase colonocyte growth and proliferation, favouring nutrient absorption [29,30].…”

“…In addition, bacterial fermentation of such fibres increases the concentration of short chain fatty acids, mainly butyrate, which have a trophic role and increase colonocyte growth and proliferation, favouring nutrient absorption [29,30]. FOS also help in reduction of the production of odorous components such as ammonia, phenol, indole, biogenic amines, coming from the putrefaction of proteins by bacteria other than the commensal flora, and as a consequence help reduce faecal odour and flatulence [28,30]. SENSI and ADULT are also supplemented with Psyllium fibre (0.5% of the formula …”

“…Há várias causas fisiológicas e patológicas de aumento na produção de gás pelo intestino grosso, no entanto, em relação às causas relacionadas com o uso de probióticos, de acordo com Swanson et al (2002), a suplementação com probióticos pode aumentar a quantidade de substrato para as bactérias redutoras de enxofre, aumentando as concentrações de compostos sulfúricos nas fezes. Como consequência desse processo, há aumento da quantidade de gás no intestino grosso.…”
