Il est communément admis en France que la notion biologique de race est scientifiquement invalidée depuis les années 1950. Pourtant, la « race », comme catégorie biologique, est loin d’être sortie des pratiques scientifiques. Au contraire, ces usages sont multiples et fragmentaires. La notion de race se transforme ainsi au fil de sa circulation entre disciplines des sciences « dures » et entre contextes nationaux. Et surtout, son usage comme notion biologique n’est pas cantonné aux seuls professionnels de la santé et des sciences naturelles. Aux États-Unis, les particuliers recourent à des tests génétiques pour s’affilier à des « races-ascendances bio-géographiques ». Des sociologues et historiens analysent les usages de la « race » en sciences « dures » et en médecine dans le contexte étatsunien, depuis une vingtaine d’années. Au regard de ce foisonnement nord-américain, les recherches en sciences sociales se font rares sur le sujet en France. Dans cet entretien, Magali Bessone et Claude-Olivier Doron proposent des lectures novatrices des modalités de construction et des usages des catégories ethniques et raciales dans le champ des sciences naturelles et de la médecine. Ils reviennent sur la pertinence de l’opposition entre constructivisme social et naturalisme lorsque ces paradigmes sont appliqués à la « race ». Enfin, ils invitent à déconstruire les usages parfois complexes de cette notion, en produisant des enquêtes empiriquement fondées dans le contexte français.
