The construct validity of a Chinese-language version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D; Radloff, 1977) was tested on a sample of 138 Hong Kong Chinese married couples. Confirmatory factor analysis identified 2 factors: (a) depressive symptom factors and (b) interpersonal problem factors. Those factors attained convergent, discriminant, and structural validity when evaluated against social desirability. The CES-D also manifested nomological validity in terms of its significant relationships with measures of life satisfaction and stressful life events.

Whether filial piety or financial support to older parents is eroded or maintained through societal modernisation is an unresolved issue in China and a matter of widespread concern. Whereas structural-functionalist theories predict erosion, alternative views suggest that modernisation reduces filial piety only minimally or conditionally. One possible condition that resists the modernisation effect is education. The impacts of modernisation and its interaction with Chinese education are therefore the focus of this study. Using various sources, the paper reports analyses of the relationships between the levels of modernisation in six Chinese cities, measured by average gross domestic product per capita, the average wage and the percentage of the workforce that are employed in the service sector, and variations in expressions of filial piety and cash payments to parents. Representative samples of the cities' adult residents were used. It was found that filial piety and cash payments were lower when the citizen was in a city with higher or more advanced modernisation, and that the reduction in affirmations of filial piety associated with higher modernisation was less among citizens with higher education. It is concluded that educational policy and practice can be a means to sustain filial piety in the face of modernisation.

The concept of resilience is reviewed from a range of disciplinary perspectives in this paper. Both broad and narrow definitions of resilience are highlighted and a working definition of resilience is proposed to inform research, policy and practice. Different psychological, social and ecological protective factors, particularly competence, optimism, and bonding to family and cultural beliefs are highlighted. Theoretical relationships between resilience and positive youth development are examined with an attempt to erase misunderstandings. Finally, how schools can promote resilience among students is discussed.

HYPOTHESIS:The multi-faceted components of the metabolic syndrome now include markers of inflammation and endothelial activation. Despite this growing body of epidemiological data, standard statistical methods fail to evaluate the nature of these associations adequately. In this pilot study, we hypothesize that obesity may lead to endothelial activation which is in part mediated by dyslipidaemia and proinflammatory cytokines. These factors interact to give rise to hyperinsulinaemia, hypertension and an anti-fibrinolytic state. To test this hypothesis, we used confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling to fit these data to a model designed on theoretical grounds. METHODS: Metabolic syndrome variables, cytokines (IL6 and TNFa), markers of inflammation and endothelial activation were measured in 107 Caucasian non-diabetic subjects aged 40 -75 y. Using confirmatory factor analysis, we identified six factors to represent composite measurements of blood pressure, obesity, dyslipidaemia, hyperinsulinaemia, endothelial activation and the anti-fibrinolytic state. We fitted these variables to two separate models, one using IL-6 and the other TNFa as the cytokine, and examined the inter-relationships (path analysis) amongst these variables, based on the above hypothesis. RESULTS: Men were centrally more obese and had increased markers of endothelial activation, inflammation and the antifibrinolytic state as well as hyperinsulinaemia and dyslipidaemia, compared with women. Obesity indexes (both body mass index and waist -hip ratio) were strongly associated with multiple cardiovascular risk factors. Both IL6 and TNFa were correlated with age, male gender, obesity indexes and markers of endothelial activation. Only IL-6 was associated with smoking while TNFa was correlated with hyperinsulinaemia. In the TNFa model, 61% of the obesity variance was explained by male gender, 36% of TNFa variance by age and dyslipidaemia, 43% of dyslipidaemia variance by age and obesity, 33% of hyperinsulinaemia variance by dyslipidaemia and a non-smoking state, 29% of anti-fibrinolytic state variance by hyperinsulinaemia, 65% of endothelial activation variance by TNFa, dyslipidaemia and hyperinsulinaemia, 34% of blood pressure variance by hyperinsulinaemia and endothelial activation. In the IL-6 model, we observed similar relationships except that 23% of IL6 variance was explained by smoking and age. CONCLUSIONS: Using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling, we found that obesity, dyslipidemia and cytokines were the principal explanatory variables for the various components of the metabolic syndrome, with IL6 and TNFa having different explanatory variables and effects. These complex inter-relationships were in part mediated by hyperinsulinaemia and endothelial activation. While this hypothetical model was based on scientific evidence, supported by rigorous analysis, it requires further confirmation in large-scale prospective studies. The integration of people with intellectual disability and mental health difficulty in the community is an issue in Hong Kong because it has encountered public resistance. Understanding the public’s discrimination against them is of theoretical and practical concern. This survey of 822 residents in Hong Kong examined associations of the public’s personal interaction, education, age and sex with its discriminatory attitudes.

The SARS crisis of 2003 in Hong Kong generated widespread public fear and escalated the efforts of government and medical institutions for infection control. As such, the role of the government and medical institution in preventing public fear and anxiety became prominent. As hypothesized, trust in the institutions is especially relevant to public fear and anxiety during the epidemic crisis. For testing hypotheses involving the role of institutional trust, a telephone survey during the crisis in April 2003 and another telephone survey after the crisis in June 2003 drew data from 9,402 Hong Kong adults for analysis. Results indicate the significant negative effects of trust in the government and trust in the medical institution on anxiety. Supporting the aforementioned hypothesis the effect of institutional trust in the government was significantly more negative on anxiety during the crisis than its aftermath. Hence, the government and medical institution are particularly responsible for anxiety reduction during the crisis.
