Abstract Anatomical characterization and physical-chemical and mechanical description of Mimosa schomburgkiiwood. The use of wood of alternative species in civil construction has been an option to reduce the concentrated use of few species and to avoid the lack of raw material in the market. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical, chemical, anatomical and mechanical properties of Mimosa schomburgkii wood, in order to identify its potential use in civil construction. Mimosa schomburgkii wood, at the age of 33 years, was used. The anatomical characteristics evaluated were the dimensions of vessel elements (diameter and frequency), rays (height and width) and fibers (length, width, wall thickness and lumen thickness). The chemical constitution was determined with the quantification of extractive content, lignin and holocellulose. For the physical-mechanical characterization, it was evaluated the specific gravity and apparent density, contractions, anisotropy coefficient, static bending strength, compression strength parallel to grain, traction strength parallel to grain, shear strength and Janka hardness (parallel and perpendicular to grain). The wood has libriform fibers, average length of 1180 μm, and it is classified as short. The wood basic density is on average of 0.80 g.cm -3 (high density). The anisotropy...
Briquetting is a form to aggregate value in the biomass production chain, to re-use sustainably waste and to provide high-quality solid biofuels, as well as to enable the development of the energy market. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the production of briquettes from epicarp waste of macauba fruit and verify the influence of different temperatures and compaction pressures on the chemical, physical, and mechanical characteristics of the briquettes. The epicarp was reduced to particles and, then classified, dried, and characterized for their physical and chemical properties. The briquettes were produced by using compression pressures of 62, 83, and 103 bar and temperatures of 90 and 120 °C. The effect of these factors upon the variables studied was verified through regression analysis. The increase of pressure and temperature contributed to greater mass loss of the briquettes. Apparent density and energy density increased due to temperature rise. High values of energy density were obtained, which demonstrates the potential of the macauba fruit epicarp to produce briquettes for generation of thermal energy
-There are many species of the Eucalyptus genus presents high levels of the growth stress. These stresses are mechanical efforts generated during the tree growth to help maintaining the balance of the cup in response to environmental and silvicultural agents. The stresses are responsible for the cracks of tops and for the warp after unfolding. The objective of this study was to test five different methods to minimize the effects of growth stress on the production of Eucalyptus urophylla sawlogs. The boards produced were then evaluated and measured for cracking, arching, curvature and cupping. The treatment with herbicide presented the smallest medium indexes of cracking (16.63 cm) and of arching (0.23 mm.m -1 ), while the medium curvature was smaller than observed in boards unfolded in 72 hours after the reduction of the trees (0.88 mm.m -1 ). Unfolding after ten days of harvesting represented the less efficient technique in the cracking control, curvature and arching. The cupping was not observed during boards processing. The herbicide application was more efficient in the reduction of the effects of the growth tensions. Keywords: Unfold of the wood; Defects in wood; Sawmill.
