L’historiographie des années 1970-1980 s’est beaucoup intéressée à « la crise de la fin du Moyen Âge » et l’a envisagée comme une crise systémique qui frappait tous les secteurs de la vie humaine et aboutissait même à une crise de la civilisation. Mais à trop vouloir donner une unité dépressive aux XIV e et XV e siècles, ce courant a négligé d’observer les différences de rythme de cette crise selon les années, les lieux et les secteurs, de même que les effets d’aubaine qu’elle peut aussi porter en elle. Envisager la crise à l’échelle locale permet de cerner les rythmes discordants entre crise générale et crise locale. Le cas parisien est un observatoire privilégié puisque son statut de capitale place la ville au cœur de la crise politico-économique de la fin du Moyen Âge, tandis que d’abondantes sources foncières permettent de suivre assez précisément les prix de l’immobilier qui paraît être un bon indicateur de la réalité de la crise. Cela permet de montrer que la crise générale frappe la capitale de manière différente selon les époques et peut même parfois lui profiter, en particulier au XIV e siècle.

(dir.), La cour et la ville dans l'Europe du Moyen Âge et des Temps Modernes, Turnhout, Brepols, 2015 », Histoire Urbaine, n° 44 (2015, p. 168-175.La cour et la ville ont chacune, comme objet d'étude, suscité un champ historiographique solide et abondant : la cour depuis toujours, la ville depuis les années 1970 seulement, mais avec un dynamisme qui ne s'est pas démenti ces dernières années. Leurs relations, en revanche, sont longtemps restées un angle mort de la recherche que la session sur « la cour et la ville », organisée à l'occasion de la XI e conférence de l'AEHU qui s'est tenue à Prague en 2012 et dont les actes sont ici publiés, se propose de réduire. La question des rapports entre ville et cour suscitant beaucoup de travaux ces dernières années, il a paru important de prendre le temps d'en rendre compte en détail. L'année 2014 a ainsi été particulièrement riche en rencontres sur ce sujet : le 2-3 juin a eu lieu à Valladolid un colloque organisé par Germán Gamero Igea et María Narbona Carceles sur La cour et la ville. Réception et installation des entourages royaux dans les villes ibériques à la fin du Moyen Âge ; le 5-6 juin s'est tenu au Petit Palais un colloque sur Paris, ville de cour (XIIIe-XVIIIe siècle) organisé par Boris Bove, Murielle Gaude-Ferragu et Cédric Michon ; un autre colloque s'est tenu à Paris le 19-21 juin, organisé par le Centre André Chastel, sur Artistes à la ville et artistes à la cour (1300-1600) ; tandis que le 27-28 novembre à Valence a eu lieu un autre colloque sur Approvisionner et financer la cour. Les relations économiques entre les cours ibériques et les sociétés urbaines à la fin du Moyen Âge, coordonné par Alexandra Beauchamp et Antoni Furio. Ainsi que l'avait prédit Denis Menjot en 2011, l'étude des relations entre la ville et la cour est appelée à devenir un champ classique de l'histoire urbaine dans les années à venir 1 . Le volume qu'il a co-dirigé avec Léonard Courbon comprend 15 contributions, plus les introductions des directeurs de la publication. Elles sont regroupées en trois parties (I. Cours en villes et villes de cour ; II. Pratiques de mobilité et espaces d'interaction et de communication, III. Entre la cour et la ville : médiations, confrontations, collaborations), assez rhétoriques car les articles étant monographiques, ils pouvaient émarger à plusieurs thèmes. On préfèrera, pour rendre compte de ce bel ouvrage, en proposer une synthèse problématique et personnelle, quitte à ne pas résumer scrupuleusement toutes les contributions.La principale raison pour laquelle les historiens se sont peu intéressés à cette relation pourtant évidente -il y a-t-il encore des cours rurales entre XIVe et XVIIe siècle ? -tient dans la difficulté à penser l'articulation de deux objets de nature différente. La ville est avant tout un objet géographique, défini par sa densité et sa diversité de sa population 2 , tandis que la cour est un objet social, défini comme l'ensemble des r...
Le concept de « religion civique » est le plus souvent abordé sous l’angle des pratiques religieuses collectives. Les processions paniques de 1412 permettent d’établir qu’elles tournent autour des reliques des saints royaux et des saints parisiens, mais qu’elle est moins royale au xv e siècle qu’elle ne le sera durant les guerres de religion, et aussi moins structurée autour culte de sainte Geneviève. Une approche individualisée de la question à travers un corpus de 69 testaments du xiii e - xv e siècles permet de poser la question de la réalité de l’adhésion des citadins à ces rituels collectifs. Il en ressort que les bourgeois ne cherchent pas plus leur salut auprès des saints royaux que des saints civiques. Au contraire, ils recherchent surtout les prières des pauvres de l’Hôtel-Dieu, des Quinze-Vingts et des léproseries de Paris, qui prennent en charge toutes les facettes de l’assistance à l’échelle de la ville. Cette dévotion partagée entre différentes strates de la société relève moins de la religion civique, que d’une affiliation communautaire dans le cadre d’un catholicisme corporatif à l’échelle de la ville, gage d’une très forte identité urbaine.
