Introduction There is growing interest worldwide in the evaluation of positive mental health and wellbeing. Aim This study was to translate the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS) into Chinese and assess the reliability and validity of this scale in a sample of undergraduate nursing trainees. Methods A forward and backward translation protocol was used to translate the scale into Chinese. The psychometric properties of the C-WEMWBS, such as internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability and factorial validity, were analysed. Results All 14 items of the initial C-WEMWBS were rated as conceptually equivalent to those of the original version. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated the emergence of a single factor. The psychometric properties of the C-WEMWBS were satisfactory, with an internal consistency reliability of .94 and a test-retest reliability of .83. The item-total correlations ranged from .66 to .83. There was a moderate relationship (r = .52) between the C-WEMWBS and the WHO-5. Implications for practice This was the first Chinese version of the WEMWBS to be developed and psychometrically assessed with a sample of undergraduate nursing trainees. It provides a reliable quantitative tool to evaluate mental well-being in non-clinical settings, which has important implications for mental health nursing.

We report on stable Fe isotope fractionation during microbial and chemical reduction of structural Fe(III) in nontronite NAu-1. (56)Fe/(54)Fe fractionation factors between aqueous Fe(II) and structural Fe(III) ranged from -1.2 to +0.8‰. Microbial (Shewanella oneidensis and Geobacter sulfurreducens) and chemical (dithionite) reduction experiments revealed a two-stage process. Stage 1 was characterized by rapid reduction of a finite Fe(III) pool along the edges of the clay particles, accompanied by a limited release to solution of Fe(II), which partially adsorbed onto basal planes. Stable Fe isotope compositions revealed that electron transfer and atom exchange (ETAE) occurred between edge-bound Fe(II) and octahedral (structural) Fe(III) within the clay lattice, as well as between aqueous Fe(II) and structural Fe(III) via a transient sorbed phase. The isotopic fractionation factors decreased with increasing extent of reduction as a result of the depletion of the finite bioavailable Fe(III) pool. During stage 2, microbial reduction was inhibited while chemical reduction continued. However, further ETAE between aqueous Fe(II) and structural Fe(III) was not observed. Our results imply that the pool of bioavailable Fe(III) is restricted to structural Fe sites located near the edges of the clay particles. Blockage of ETAE distinguishes Fe(III) reduction of layered clay minerals from that of Fe oxyhydroxides, where accumulation of structural Fe(II) is much more limited.

BackgroundThe acceptances and long-term outcomes of the renal transplantations are seriously jeopardized by inflammatory responses and damage to tissues. The present study intended to explicate the pharmacological effect of luteolin (LT) in renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and the possible mechanism of action of LT.Material/MethodsThe effect of LT on the level of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in the homogenates of kidney tissues of male Swiss albino mice was determined after I/R injury. The effect of LT on MDA (malondialdehyde), SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), and glutathione were also identified by enzyme assay. In addition, Western blotting was used to determine the level of Bcl-2, Bax, and caspase-3 in the presence of LT.ResultsThe results showed that LT caused significant reduction in the level of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 compared to the I/R group without LT (p>0.05). To further confirm this, the efficacy of LT on the histopathology of I/R injured renal tissues was studied. It was found that LT restored cellular viability of damaged renal tissue. This observation was further confirmed by TUNEL assay, where it was found that LT caused considerable reduction in the population of apoptotic cells. LT pretreatment significantly increased Bcl-2 expression and reduced the level of Bax expression together with a reduction in the level of caspase-3 expression.ConclusionsLuteolin showed its effect by interfering and attenuating a number of pathways, including pathways for inflammation and apoptosis in renal tissues.

Aims New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) complicating acute myocardial infarction (AMI) has been associated with poor survival, but the clinical implication of NOAF on heart failure (HF) is still not well characterized. We aimed to investigate the relationship between NOAF complicating AMI and HF hospitalization. Methods and results Adult AMI patients identified in the New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation Complicating Acute Myocardial Infarction in Shanghai registry who, discharged alive, had complete echocardiography and follow-up data from February 2014 to March 2018 were included. Patients were divided according to the presence of NOAF. The outcome measures were HF hospitalization and death during the observational period (until 10 April 2019). Cox proportional hazard models were performed in the whole population and propensity score-matched (PSM) cohort to assess the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Overall, 2075 patients (mean age: 65.2 ± 12.3 years, 77.3% were men) with AMI were analysed, of whom 228 (11.0%) developed NOAF. Advanced age, admission HF (Killip II-IV), impaired renal function, decreased left ventricular ejection fraction, increased heart rate, and left atrial enlargement were independent predictors of NOAF. Over a median observational period of 2.7 years, the annual incidence rates of HF hospitalization were 18.4% and 2.8% for patients with NOAF and sinus rhythm, respectively. After adjustment for confounders, NOAF was significantly associated with HF hospitalization (HR: 3.14, 95% CI: 2.30-4.28, P < 0.001). Similar results were obtained when accounting for the competing risk of all-cause death (subdistribution HR: 3.06, 95% CI: 2.18-4.30, P < 0.001) or from the PSM cohort (HR: 2.82, 95% CI: 1.99-4.00, P < 0.001). Patients with persistent NOAF (HR: 5.81, 95% CI: 3.59-9.41) were at significantly higher risk of HF hospitalization when compared with those with transient one (HR: 2.61, 95% CI: 1.84-3.70, P interaction = 0.008). Although post-MI NOAF was significantly related to cardiovascular death (annual incidence rates for NOAF and sinus rhythm were 9.4% and 2.3%, respectively; HR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.36-2.85, P < 0.001), such an association was attenuated when HF hospitalization (modelled as a time-varying covariate) and antithrombotic treatment were adjusted (HR: 1.37, 95% CI: 0.92-2.02, P = 0.121). Conclusions In patients with AMI, NOAF is strongly associated with an increased long-term risk of HF hospitalization. Our findings suggest that strengthened secondary prevention of HF should be considered in this high-risk population.
