Résumé L’École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr connaît depuis sa création en 1802 des réformes du mode de recrutement des futurs cadres de l’armée de Terre et de la formation qu’ils reçoivent. La réforme de la formation initiale lancée en 2002 transforme en profondeur le dispositif d’enseignement. Elle permet aux élèves d’acquérir une formation pluridisciplinaire et globale dans laquelle la culture militaire et les savoirs académiques forment un continuum. Elle inscrit la nouvelle scolarité dans la dynamique de formation européenne. La refonte de la formation accroît l’ouverture des cursus au monde universitaire, aux grandes écoles et renforce le dialogue entre les futurs dirigeants civils et militaires. L’évolution de la scolarité des futurs officiers confirme la thèse d’une amplification des processus d’internationalisation et d’académisation de la formation délivrée à Coëtquidan en référence à la spécificité militaire.
Pour répondre aux défis nouveaux des théâtres d’engagements, les grandes écoles militaires sont contraintes d’adapter en permanence leur formation aux évolutions de la guerre. Les réformes de la formation des officiers mises en place en 1998 et 2002 aux écoles de Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan témoignent de ces dynamiques. À partir d’une méthodologie fondée sur l’enquête de terrain et l’observation participante, cet article propose d’étudier les modalités concrètes selon lesquelles les processus de transmission des savoirs en formation initiale s’opèrent (pédagogies proactives – proactive learning – , pédagogie par projet, primat donné à l’approche globale pour s’adapter en opération) et de considérer le processus de transmission comme résultant d’activités complexes. Cet article examine également l’influence de la transmission d’un savoir autour des effets de l’action militaire (psychologie, sociologie, sciences politiques) sur la socialisation professionnelle des officiers et les résultats qu’elle produit en termes d’identité militaire renforcée et de compétences opérationnelles révélées. L’étude du processus de transmission du savoir militaire met en valeur in fine une conception opérationnelle des finalités de la formation, des savoirs à enseigner et de la socialisation professionnelle.
