Sur la base d'une large revue de la littérature, cet article retrace la manière dont le temps a été pris en compte depuis le début du siècle dans les paradigmes qui ont jalonné la recherche sur l'enseignement. Il montre que l'importance de la variabilité du temps que le maître alloue réellement à l'enseignement d'une matière est reconnue depuis longtemps et constitue un fait récurrent dans tout ce courant de recherche. Les progrès méthodologiques réalisés pour mieux appréhender les relations entre le rendement des élèves et le temps d'apprentissage sont également analysés. Ainsi, le modèle de Carroll et tous les travaux qui se sont caractérisés par la prise en compte du temps investi par l'élève dans l'apprentissage de la matière ainsi que l'importance de la relation entre contenu enseigné et contenu évalué y sont présentés.
Pour Flavell (1982), il faut aujourd'hui proceder iJ une analyse des filiations entre connaissances; plus fine que celie menee par Piaget. Le modele par elaboration de regles developpe par Siegler (1976, 1978) participeiJ cet effort. Ltillustration la plus achevee de ce modele porte sur la comprehension de 10 balance. Toutefois, comme Ie soulignent Larivee et al. (1987), ce modele n'est pas suffisant pour englober l'ensemble des strategies de resolution de problemes observables, notamment celie des en/ants les plus jeunes.La presente recherche vise acombler cette lacune. Des en/ants de quatre asix ans ant ere mis en presence d'une simple balance aplateaux et invites apredire les effets de manipulations variees au aexpliquer comment produire certains effets. Les items sont inspires des anciens travaux de Piaget et de ses coliegues: Une premiere version de l'epreuve a ere presentee a45 sujets. Deux items ant ete ajoutespour constituer la version terminate de l'epreuve; presentee iJ 80 en/ants. Les deux series de resultats ont ete soumises a une analyse hierarchique (Gutman). II y a plus de dix ans deja, Vergnaud denoncait pertinemment le danger d'occultation que comporte la recherche trop hative de formalisation: «En voulant enfermer dans des structures algebriques ou dans des structures ad hoc fabriquees par lui et fignolees par les logiciens, un ensemble de faits de conduites trop vaste, Piaget a ete rapide et imprudent: il a ainsi Iaisse echapper, en poursuivant son ambition structuraliste, un grand nombre de faits de conduites diversifiees, Si l'on considere contenu par contenu, tache par tache, les conduites des enfants, on est amene a mettre en doute la fecondite de l'effort engage par lui pour decrire par des structures abstraites generales, la pensee des enfants de tel ou tel stade,» (Vergnaud, 1977, p. 110).
